‘It’s as easy as riding a bike’ they say of less-than-challenging activities. The saying rather overlooks the fact that the first time we tried, riding a bike was anything but easy.
How do you learn? This writer can’t really recall anything beyond a vague memory of being pushed along before being told that the parental hand was no longer in contact with the seat. A threshold unknowingly crossed, I was apparently now riding a bike.
I also have another memory of riding that same bike straight into a lamppost a year or so later, which goes to show it never pays for a child to become too complacent when it comes to what is supposedly an ‘easy’ activity.
As for the actual process of learning to ride, the video below outlines a seven step process. “Start riding. It’s fun,” is the blunt, unarguable tagline at the end.
