Cyclist seriously injured in hit and run involving car being chased by police

A suspect has been arrested and remains in police custody

A cyclist was seriously injured when he was hit by a driver fleeing from police. The Met said a suspect was arrested “a short while later”.

The London Evening Standard reports that a car being pursued by a marked police car hit a male cyclist on Mile End Road at around 11.30pm on Thursday December 17. The cyclist was rushed to hospital with a head injury and remains in a serious condition.

A spokeswoman said:

“At 11.30pm on Thursday, 17 December, officers in a marked police vehicle were following a car in Mile End Road. The car was in collision with a cyclist and the driver fled the scene.

“London Ambulance Service attended and treated the male cyclist for a head injury. He was taken to an east London hospital where he remains in a serious condition.”

According to Scotland Yard, the Directorate of Professional standards and the Independent Police Complaints Commission watchdog have been informed “as a matter of routine.”
