Cyclist's Strava records moment he fell into canal

Early triathlon training for ‘sofa bear turned athlete of sorts’

If he creates a segment for it, few will be keen to challenge him. Chris Kent went for a lunchtime ride and in his own words ‘went for an unintentional swim in the canal.’ Thanks to Strava, this unscheduled detour has been properly documented by GPS.

The man involved was Chris Kent, who describes himself on Twitter as “a sofa bear turned athlete of sorts.” Three people came to his aid and it seems he was unharmed in the incident – even if he was left a little cold.

This year, Kent made a New Year’s resolution to lose weight and get fitter – and unlike 99 per cent of people who do such a thing, he stuck with it.

According to a blog, he went from being short of breath just walking up the stairs and with constant back ache to completing a series of fell runs – including the Wincle Trout Run in Cheshire, where all who complete the course are awarded with a nice refreshing trout. He lost five stones in the process.

By October, he was undertaking a duathlon and it seems his plans to tackle some triathlons in 2016 may have come to unexpectedly early fruition.

Alex has written for more cricket publications than the rest of the road.cc team combined. Despite the apparent evidence of this picture, he doesn't especially like cake.

So? According to my GPS I once jumped off Battersea bridge and went a couple of miles up the middle of the Thames on my Brompton. Another time I went to the shops via some town in Poland...

Ride carefull is all i can say. I have been out late at five pm and the levels of light are low. objects in the road or potholes. I guess he swerved and took a dive.

He said it was 10pm, so properly dark, but it would be interesting to know.   I've ridden along there and it's a really high quality cycle path.
