Buttertubs Pass_Image from Google Maps.pngCyclist found seriously injured on Buttertubs Pass has died in hospital
A cyclist found seriously injured on Buttertubs Pass in the Yorkshire Dales at the weekend has died of his injuries.
The man, in his 50s, was found on Sunday 4 October at around 11.40am by a passing motorist, about 200m from the hill summit. He was taken to James Cook hospital in Middlesbrough where he died on Monday 5 October.
Police believe he was cycling from the direction of Hawes towards Muker. He was wearing a white helmet, fluorescent yellow t-shirt and dark shorts, and was riding a silver Canyon bike.
Police have renewed an appeal for information.
Traffic Sergeant Ian Pope, of the Major Collision Investigation Unit, said: "I would like to hear from anyone who was travelling along the pass between Hawes and Muker from 11am to 11.45am on Sunday morning.
"It would have taken the cyclist a while to reach Buttertubs' summit and there must have been a number of vehicles or other cyclists who passed him. I urge them to please contact us, no matter how insignificant they think their information may be, it could be hugely important in helping us piece together the circumstances that led to him falling from his cycle."
Buttertubs Pass was made famous when it formed part of Stage One of the 2014 Tour de France.

Hands up, I did read it as though the implication was he was struck by a vehicle but the language used in the report leans that way and the direction of travel would indicate he was heading uphill.
All the same, a tragedy for the family.
A few accusations for an RTA here.
They've not released details of the post-mortem.
There's just as much chance he's had an heart attack as there is he's a victim of hit and run.
RIP.
RIP Fella, this is not the time to guess what happened, the post mortem will hopefully find out how he died, so his family wont be left wondering. We, and are opinions don't matter right now.
Was he going uphill or down? Crashing uphill seems unlikely.

Sad news to hear of anybody being injured or die. I would of thought it wouldn't be too difficult forensically to ascertain whether he was hit by a vehicle or just fell. He could of been spooked and fallen? Hopefully they will get to the reason for his families sake.
This is very sad news. This is my local area so I know this road quite well. I hope it is discovered what happened and my thoughts go out to this rider's family and friends.

What the police spokesman says is:
"It would have taken the cyclist a while to reach Buttertubs' summit and there must have been a number of vehicles or other cyclists who passed him."
They're talking about people who passed while he was riding, not suggesting he was lying by the side of the road as people ignored him.
For all we know the motorist who saw him was the very next person to pass by after he fell, or whatever happened to him.
In any case, RIP.
Not good. What were the weather conditions on the day? All the same, white helmet / flouro yellow shirt...? What possible excuse is there for not seeing him. I've only ridden BTP twice so can't recall what the road conditions are like, tight bends? Driver on his mobile / hungover from Sat night boozing.
Thoughts with family.
Possibly that there was no-one else around to see him. We don't know and shouldn't insinuate without evidence.
