“Perfectly safe environment”: Queue-jumping drivers spotted racing along bike lanes and pavements; Gaudu apologises for comments about teammate Arnaud Démare; Zwift exit from virtual race; Cyclist orders brake blocks… gets a wig + more on the live blog
SUMMARY

Strangest reason to get kicked out a Zwift race?
Any Zwifters got a similar tale to live blog favourite Harry?
Got kicked out of two zwift races because my heart rate wasn’t going above 90bpm and it turns out I’ve connected to my neighbours whoop by accident

Poor Brian was just enjoying a cuppa tea and a biscuit, next thing he knows his heart rate is at the centre of an international cheating scandal…
When you order brake blocks... but get a wig
Oh look, it’s Wiggo…

Hmmm as I look out my window at the grey, damp nothingness of 4°C I feel like I’ve got a decent answer to that question, Toms…
Gaudu apologises for leaked comments about teammate Arnaud Démare
Quel drame… two of France’s biggest racing names have been involved in a groupchat scandal (how very 2023).
Gaudu this morning apologised to Arnaud Démare after screenshots of his less than complimentary thoughts about his teammate were leaked from Discord…

From what we can tell, assisted by a certain online translation generator, Gaudu wrote about not wanting his team’s fastest sprinter on their Tour de France team… “The fact that we don’t talk and don’t race together much is an advantage. If he wants, I can say it to his face again. I’m not afraid of him. He knows I don’t want him in the Tour. I already told him”…
Yeah, maybe best not to stick that in a groupchat with loads of people on the internet, David…
Come this morning, Gaudu’s line had changed… “Problems that can occur in a team must remain internal. I would therefore like to apologise to the team and Arnaud. I should never have vented these statements in public. My apologies to the team and Arnaud.”

First it was the Surrey residents, then the Wolverhampton Commonwealth Games objectors, now the NIMBY torch has been passed to Essex…

road.cc editor Jack manages the incredible feat of crashing on the turbo
Not even G’s managed this one yet…
Turns out the axle on the back wheel wasn’t quite as compatible with the trainer as we first thought. Regardless, made for a great clip…
Anyone want to make Jack feel better and admit to falling foul of this trap too?
Devon and Cornwall dashcam footage sent to police surges to record highs

Devon and Cornwall Police said a surge in dashcam and helmet camera footage sent to them has resulted in 2022 being a record year for submissions. The force said there were 4,736 submissions last year, up 151 per cent on 2021.
> Here’s what to do if you capture a near miss, close pass or collision on camera while cycling
The force told the BBC it had taken action against 3,400 motorists in 2022, also a record, and a 135 per cent increase on 2021. Force road safety lead Supt Adrian Leisk said he was “incredibly grateful” for public support to reduce road harm.

"Make Trafford a green and connected borough where more people choose active travel every day": Council urges residents to pick non-car transport
Trafford Council hopes to get more people “walking, wheeling and cycling” and has launched a consultation with residents, businesses and visitors until 12 February.
Ultimatly the goal is, the council says, to get 90 per cent of journeys under one mile to be taken by foot, bike or scooter and 80 per cent of journeys under five miles within the next 10 years to be active travel or public transport.
“We love Trafford and we want to encourage as many people as possible to leave their cars at home and to walk, cycle and scooter across our borough. This would not only improve our air quality but would be a massive boost to our physical and mental health as well,” Cllr Aidan Williams said.

“Pedestrians? Nah never heard of them mate…”
We’ve been here before unfortunately…
In November, a Dublin bus company confirmed that a “full investigation” is being carried out after one of its employees was filmed driving a double-decker bus on both the cycle lane and footpath in order to undertake a queue of traffic.

Oh, and then there was that time the irony police were called…

Is Zwift racing 'cleaner' than pro road racing? Dissecting the furore around cheating in virtual cycling
After a number of high-profile incidents of foul play in the competitive arm of cycling's biggest online platform, a narrative has emerged that cheating is rife and goes unchecked... is this true, and what does Zwift itself have to say?

I'll counter that by saying the Bryton 750se I have drives me nuts at times. Inconsistantly picks up on routes created on Komoot and the app re-syncs every few seconds when trying to set up the device and sends me back to the home screen. The most infuriating one is that I turned live track on. Once. It now won't turn off and repeatedly flags up the live track is starting, and then disconnecting every few seconds whilst riding. I haven't timed it but it wouldn't suprise me if 10-20% of the time the the screen is covered with an error message. That's been about 6 weeks now. Other than that it's great :/

@Paul J Van Schip certainly seems a bit of a dick, but he's a European and multiple World Champion on the track, pretty sure you don't get there without having some talent in your legs.
Poor Vincent cannot get over the simple fact that given the choice people prefer dedicated cycling spaces, rather than pretending to be cars like vehicular cyclists.
What is the point of the fancy air sensor if it can't account for changing weather conditions?? If all you care about is a delayed approximation of aerodynamic watts in steady conditions, you don't need any special sensors for that. Just your speed on a decently flat course is enough to approximate rolling resistance and drivetrain losses. And the rest must be aero. If you assume a less aero body position at the same watts, your speed will drop while rolling resistance also drops, which means approximated aero watts goes up. And that's enough to demonstrate what you've shown in your testing protocol ("I sat upright and the number went up a little while later").
Your correction is accurate - it's almost always been "the (lack of) thought that (doesn't) count". "Massive" - less than a billion a year spent on active travel (trying to catch up / building a network across the entire country) Not massive - 6 billion every year (2026-2030) spent on road *maintenance* of existing "already built, goes everywhere, very convenient" road network for inactive travel Ultimately the reason "cycle infra" is *needed* is those unbelievably colossal amounts spent every year (and for more than a century now) on making mass motoring not just viable but apparently the "best choice" for most journeys. As the Dutch and others have shown, the majority of people *are* prepared to cycle and even mix with very light, slow local motor traffic *if* cycling is also made safe and convenient for the whole of their journey (including secure parking at both ends). (The history of the financial drivers of the current situation are a complex topic but note that while people complain about "crumbling roads" and underfunded motor infra - with some reason - by us continuing the fuel duty escalator freeze (for example) we're actually helping motorists pay *even less* for that activity / subsidising more of the cost of driving than ever.)
yes, but people will still object - which was my point.
So ' Priority of Road Users' and 1.5 metre clearance at 30mph has been been reduced to 'sharing'? NCN route 2 here in South Hams is an absolute scream with white vans, tractors and total idiots who refuse,or are totally incapable,to reverse on high Devon banked lanes ...means you have to get off and pedal back to a passing place....could be at that all day...so I don't bother...
@MaxiMinimalist Agreed. The big problem I see now is today's parents grew up being driven to their schools, and therefore, see private motor vehicles as the only viable form of transport. The vast majority of UK infant and primary schools have a catchment area that is within easy walking distance from home to school. Yet, the traffic caused by pupils being driven to/from school is astonishing. Banishing the "School Run" should be a priority for all schools.
When I was a kid (that was during the previous millenium when phones were connected to a plug in the wall), I rode my bicycle to school, music academy, sport grounds, parties even during the winter. The government didn't have to spend, correct that, didn't have to think of spending massive amounts of money to build cycling specific infrastructures. Over the past 3 or 4 decades, cars have grown bigger, taller, safer (for their drivers) and faster. Meanwhile, motorists have become abusive, aggressive, hypersensitive to people moving on two wheels, aka cyclists. Spending billions upon billions on new infrastructure won't address the crux of the matter. Sadly.

One distinctive of IE vs UK is the far higher (x3) occurrence of drink driving in accidents. UK has other areas where we fall behind.
While I’m on, it would be useful if road.cc could flag up Irish and UK stories by area a bit more clearly, as it’s often difficult to know which set of laws are being broken (or not).
