Over the past year or so, Giro has been remolding its Montaro helmet, having unveiled the Montaro Mips III last year. But the brand’s latest take on the helmet looks to boost almost everything. I’m talking protection, breathability, and weight savings… and the price.

The new Montaro Pro from Giro is built especially for modern trail and enduro riding, while meeting certifications for e-mountain biking. That’s achieved through the new Aura Ring II polycarbonate roll cage that’s built into the helmet’s fancy Progressive Layering Nanobead EPS foam. We’re told that the Aura Ring tech improves the helmet’s structural integrity.

Boosting protection further is the inclusion of Mips Spherical. It’s the brand’s poshest model of the rotational impact reduction system that takes the form of a secondary EPS layer that moves independently from the outer layer. Mips describes this as a ball-and-socket action, which I think describes it perfectly. The benefit you get here, as opposed to other versions of Mips is that second impact-absorbing layer of foam, and it’s so well hidden that you won’t know it’s there.

With a size medium claimed to weigh 453g, which is definitely nothing to sniff at, there are, of course, tonnes of features to get stuck into. 23 WindTunnel vents add breathability to the lid, while internal channels guide air over the head. There’s a DryCore sweat management system with a browpad included to keep salty sweat from getting into your eyes, and there’s an Ionic+ anti-microbial lining.

Elsewhere, it’s much of the standard as the Montaro Pro offers ‘refined’ eyewear storage, is closed thanks to a Fidlock magnetic buckle, and there’s a Roc Loc Trail Air fit system. The helmet’s visor can be shifted into two positives and handily, the webbing dividers are adjustable – a small but very useful touch that I often miss on many helmets.

This helmet is then certified to NTA-8776 e-Bike and is compliant with CE and CPSC standards.

If reasonably lightweight but rather serious protection is something you’re after, expect to spend £269.99 on the Giro Montaro Pro.
