"Insanity if Cav not at Tour de France": All the reaction to Mark Cavendish's second national champs win
Moments after winning his second British National Road Race Championship, Mark Cavendish asked the TV cameras: “Can you imagine winning your 35th Tour de France stage in the British champion’s jersey? It would be pretty beautiful”.
It would indeed…BUT (there’s always a but), Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl and Patrick Lefevere have well-documented other ideas about how to win stages at next month’s Grand Tour.
Who’d have thought, eh?
Cav never ceases to amaze 🇬🇧 🥇 pic.twitter.com/9ftmFBhbun
— The TT Podcast 🚴♂️ (@ttpdcst) June 26, 2022
To the backdrop of his team boss making it clear Fabio Jakobsen is no.1 sprinter at the Belgian outfit, Cav promised to be ready if he’s required…and boy is he ready…
And it’s always great to see Cav on a gritty day out, pigeonholed as a pure sprinter but today showed again so much more, and lastly Sam Watson. A name we’ll be hearing a lot more of.
— Alex Dowsett (@alexdowsett) June 26, 2022
No sitting behind Michael Mørkøv today…Cav was in the breaks, pushing the pace, shutting down attacks, leading from the front…not bad for just a ‘sprinter’…
Regardless of the result today at the GB national champs… bloody LOVE seeing Mark RACE… proper race. From the very first break.
— Peta Cavendish (@petatodd) June 26, 2022
Mark Cavendish you are one of the greatest sprinters of all time. BUT, shit you can race a bike all day long.
200km in the attack.
You really are a TRUE CHAMPION

It’s fair to say the performance has sparked a few calls for the Manx Missile to make a last-minute appearance in Copenhagen this Friday, not least from retired racer David Millar who called the idea of his former teammate not racing the Tour “absolute insanity”.
> Wiggins: “Any other team would be crazy” not to take Cav to the Tour de France
Absolute INSANITY if @MarkCavendish is not selected for the Tour de France 🤯
— David Millar (@millarmind) June 26, 2022
With @MarkCavendish now in the stripes, I think it would be silly for them not to select him for @LeTour. Imagine seeing him break Merckx’s stage win record in the red white and blue? Marketing Gold. And he’s clearly in form.
— Tom Staniford (@tomstaniford) June 26, 2022
Patrick Lefevere, the people have spoken…
Should Cav go to the #TDF22
— CycleNotts. (@CycleNott) June 26, 2022
I mean, if the Giro can decide the combativity prize via a Twitter poll, the natural next step is team selection for the most important race of the season.
So what did the main man have to say?
The man. The myth. The legend.
Ladies and gentlemen, @MarkCavendish! pic.twitter.com/Jy3cKhmCZk

A couple more…
Cavs ride today was flawless. Didn’t put a single foot wrong. Great to see him properly race like that… 70-100 watt less in threshold than the big boys but schooling the F#*k out of them. Proper bike racer!! Well done mate!! @MarkCavendish pic.twitter.com/emAYS8T7Ef

Kaitlin Armstrong sold black Jeep Cherokee for $12,000 day before fleeing Texas

Police in Texas say they have found the vehicle belonging to on-the-run murder suspect Kaitlin Armstrong, who is the prime suspect in the investigation into the shooting of gravel cyclist Moriah Wilson.
The black Jeep Cherokee was sold to a dealership on May 13, the day after Armstrong was questioned by Austin Police Department, and the day before she was spotted at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (above). Investigators believe she may have used her sister’s name to board a flight out of the state.
An anonymous donor has added $15,000 to the $6,000 reward for information leading to Armstrong’s arrest.
The man of the moment
British Champion again!🤩 The National Championships is always a special race with a unique style. 9 years after my last title in Glasgow, it seems Scotland’s been good to me again ☺️

National champs round-up: Bora's 1-2-3-4-5; Sagan makes it EIGHT; Mavi's mastery; Slovenia's best cyclist?
So, you were busy all weekend and missed the results from across the world. Don’t fear, here’s your one-stop live blog shop for national champions…
Here at home, Alice Towers won the women’s title, you probably already know who won the men’s race…
Tim Merlier is Belgian champion once again, while there was something of an upset in the women’s race as Kim de Baat took her second pro win, ten years after her first. What a time to do it. Over the border bidon-sharing Pascal Eenkhoorn took a popular Dutch title and Riejanne Markus won the women’s title.
World champion Elisa Balsamo has a fresh non-team-issue kit for January (assuming she doesn’t defend the rainbow bands, that is), winning Italy’s Tricolore. Bardiani-CSF-Faizanè rider Filippo Zana took a surprise men’s title.
CAMPIONESSA ITALIANA 🇮🇹🌈🦄

Ineos Grenadiers’ Carlos Rodríguez and UAE Team ADQ’s Mavi Garcia are Spain’s champions, the latter winning the TT champs and road race…for the THIRD YEAR RUNNING…domination.
Bora-Hansgrohe finished first, second, third, fourth and fifth at the men’s Austrian race…Felix Grosschartner was the chosen son to cross the line first. What a photo…

Cecilie Uttrup Ludwig was a popular winner in Denmark and will be lighting up the peloton with her red jersey (and entertaining interviews) for the foreseeable. Trek-Segafredo’s Alexander Kamp won the men’s race.
This one means so much to me!!🥺😭
Finally I get to wear this beautiful jersey‼️ Showing it proudly around the world🌎🇩🇰✨😍🤩🥳 WUHUUUUUU!!! How good!!🙌🏻🍾🥂😄
Thank you for all the ❤️-warming messages🙏🏻

In France, Audrey Cordon-Ragot did the double, adding the road race title to her sixth TT championship…Cav’s teammate Florian Sénéchal showed his speed to sprint into the men’s jersey.
Nils Politt and João Almeida are Germany and Portugal’s men’s champions respectively, while Kristjan Koren can claim to be Slovenia’s best male cyclist (although two lads at the Tour de France might have something to say about that)…
WiV SunGod’s Rory Townsend won the Irish men’s title. Further afield, Merhawi Kudus won Eritrea’s road title, Yukiya Arashiro Japan’s, and Teniel Campbell Trinidad and Tobago’s women’s crown.
Something in my eye 🥲 https://t.co/T7e2SpLHtf

Oxford County Council vows to eliminate road deaths and serious injuries from traffic collisions by 2050

Oxfordshire County Council has set targets of a 25 per cent cut in casualties by 2026, 50 per cent by 2030, and eliminating all road deaths and serious injuries by 2050. A spokesperson said “a commitment to minimising deaths on our roads has been long overdue”.
> “One month, two dead cyclists”: Oxford’s cycling city sign defaced after second death
“Recent tragic incidents on our roads have focused everyone’s minds on the vital importance on making our roads and streets safer for all users — especially the most vulnerable,” Andrew Gant, cabinet member for highways management told the BBC.
The council will commit an initial £250,000 to improving road infrastructure and comes after three cyclists were killed in the city since the start of 2022.

I'll counter that by saying the Bryton 750se I have drives me nuts at times. Inconsistantly picks up on routes created on Komoot and the app re-syncs every few seconds when trying to set up the device and sends me back to the home screen. The most infuriating one is that I turned live track on. Once. It now won't turn off and repeatedly flags up the live track is starting, and then disconnecting every few seconds whilst riding. I haven't timed it but it wouldn't suprise me if 10-20% of the time the the screen is covered with an error message. That's been about 6 weeks now. Other than that it's great :/
RE: Police launch road safety operation... by clamping down on cyclists using footbridge Meanwhile in Glasgow, Police Scotland are riding their motorbikes over the pedestrian and cyclists only bridge. https://x.com/FietserGlasgow/status/2065106152917012523?s=20
@Paul J Van Schip certainly seems a bit of a dick, but he's a European and multiple World Champion on the track, pretty sure you don't get there without having some talent in your legs.
Poor Vincent cannot get over the simple fact that given the choice people prefer dedicated cycling spaces, rather than pretending to be cars like vehicular cyclists.
What is the point of the fancy air sensor if it can't account for changing weather conditions?? If all you care about is a delayed approximation of aerodynamic watts in steady conditions, you don't need any special sensors for that. Just your speed on a decently flat course is enough to approximate rolling resistance and drivetrain losses. And the rest must be aero. If you assume a less aero body position at the same watts, your speed will drop while rolling resistance also drops, which means approximated aero watts goes up. And that's enough to demonstrate what you've shown in your testing protocol ("I sat upright and the number went up a little while later").
Your correction is accurate - it's almost always been "the (lack of) thought that (doesn't) count". "Massive" - less than a billion a year spent on active travel (trying to catch up / building a network across the entire country) Not massive - 6 billion every year (2026-2030) spent on road *maintenance* of existing "already built, goes everywhere, very convenient" road network for inactive travel Ultimately the reason "cycle infra" is *needed* is those unbelievably colossal amounts spent every year (and for more than a century now) on making mass motoring not just viable but apparently the "best choice" for most journeys. As the Dutch and others have shown, the majority of people *are* prepared to cycle and even mix with very light, slow local motor traffic *if* cycling is also made safe and convenient for the whole of their journey (including secure parking at both ends). (The history of the financial drivers of the current situation are a complex topic but note that while people complain about "crumbling roads" and underfunded motor infra - with some reason - by us continuing the fuel duty escalator freeze (for example) we're actually helping motorists pay *even less* for that activity / subsidising more of the cost of driving than ever.)
yes, but people will still object - which was my point.
So ' Priority of Road Users' and 1.5 metre clearance at 30mph has been been reduced to 'sharing'? NCN route 2 here in South Hams is an absolute scream with white vans, tractors and total idiots who refuse,or are totally incapable,to reverse on high Devon banked lanes ...means you have to get off and pedal back to a passing place....could be at that all day...so I don't bother...
@MaxiMinimalist Agreed. The big problem I see now is today's parents grew up being driven to their schools, and therefore, see private motor vehicles as the only viable form of transport. The vast majority of UK infant and primary schools have a catchment area that is within easy walking distance from home to school. Yet, the traffic caused by pupils being driven to/from school is astonishing. Banishing the "School Run" should be a priority for all schools.
When I was a kid (that was during the previous millenium when phones were connected to a plug in the wall), I rode my bicycle to school, music academy, sport grounds, parties even during the winter. The government didn't have to spend, correct that, didn't have to think of spending massive amounts of money to build cycling specific infrastructures. Over the past 3 or 4 decades, cars have grown bigger, taller, safer (for their drivers) and faster. Meanwhile, motorists have become abusive, aggressive, hypersensitive to people moving on two wheels, aka cyclists. Spending billions upon billions on new infrastructure won't address the crux of the matter. Sadly.

Unrelated, but I noticed that this week’s episode of UK Dash Cams feaured a few more instances of “driver nearly causes multi-car pile-up by overtaking cyclists on blind corner” than usual.
I had similar happen to me on the way home on Friday as I took primary round a blind corner approaching a mini-roundabout, some woman in a Golf decided to overtake me, got surpised by the Nissan Micra coming the other way, and nearly had me off the bike when she swerved back in. All so she could sit at the red light ~45m further down the road…

I take a small crumb of comfort that they show many drivers are appalling and most cycling incidents are a result of this rather than a concerted campaign by motorists to drive cyclists off the road – literally.
They are not even worse examples of what we see – like the lady who overtook us as she thought our sticking our right arms out before a junction was us waving her through, or cars overtaking a group when you know that they can see the oncoming car, they’ve just got cyclingitis of which the main symptom is MGIF.

UCI Rankings – Cav is 31st and Fabio is 30th (there’s literally a fag paper in it)
Fabio is unproven in the TdF and Cav with 34 wins under his belt, won the Green Jersey last year (surely there’s another tick in the box for him to ‘defend the jersey).
Cav in national stripes would bring TV coverage from national news agencies around the world, Fabio simply won’t. Coverage for the team = money from sponsors.
I’m sure Fabio is a cracking bloke and all but I just can’t see the logic here. Even if Fabio’s ‘numbers’ are better than Cavs.. experience counts for a lot in cycling.. so why not here?
I’m as disappointed as you
I’m as disappointed as you are but Jakobsen has 10 wins and 3 points jerseys this year against Cav’s 5 and 0.
