Kali is a brand that rarely follows the norm. From bamboo-built straps to its interesting Conehead technology, it goes about its own way, however, the new Kru helmet takes lightweight full-face protection into uncharted territory with its unique titanium chinbar. We’ve got all of the details.
Kali reckons that the Kru is the first ever helmet that employs a 360-degree titanium chinbar, which has been developed to squash the weighty and not-so-breathable downsides of proper full-face helmets, while delivering the protection often associated with such lids.
The brand says that although modern mountain biking has progressed so much that speeds are higher and the terrain is gnarlier, protectives haven’t quite followed suit. Although I’m sure POC might have something to say about that. But with its polarising looks, the addition of a frame-like titanium chinbar promises to boost ventilation and visibility.
Though the titanium chinbar isn’t just bolted onto the front of the helmet. Rather, it’s molded into the lid itself. In fact, it’s a ‘continuous titanium structure’ that’s integrated into the helmet, which Kali says preserves the strength of a 360-degree design but without having to rely on bolts, which might sacrifice overall rigidity.
The Kru might look fairly different from any modern full-facer, but it still meets ASTM downhill certifications. However, the helmet has gone through additional impact testing that reaches beyond standard protocols. Apparently, these tests better reflect actual riding scenarios.
Of course, the helmet isn’t just about its fancy chinbar. As well as that interesting tech, the Kru receives Kali’s Composite Fusion technology, an ERT low-density layer, and a frequency fit system. Included in the box is a selection of pads to fine-tune the fit, too.
The Kali Kru is available in two sizes, S/M and L/XL, weighing a claimed 650g and 680g respectively. There are then two colours on offer – solid black and solid white.
