Gianni Visconti's toe retention

We’d say he still has a full complement, but without knowing his medical history we can’t state with absolute certainty he started the stage with 10.

Lucky/unlucky for Giovanni Visconti during today’s Giro stage when a piece of metal came up off the road and went through his shoe (he’s put a hex key here to show the diameter)… as he writes, if the angle had been different 🥶 , via IG: visconti_giovanni pic.twitter.com/4uvQTpeMzS

Vaughters asking the big questions

Eating through my leftover Covid scare/lockdown canned soup supply for dinner tonight. Question: should I wear pants? Always tough to say when you live alone.

Short and completely unremarkable on the face of it… but there is talk of crosswinds…

Free parking

Your local authority: Let’s allow everybody to store their property in the road for free

Also your local authority: We’ve got no money and no possible way to raise any

There's an online queue for the Rapha website

It’s because that Palace EF Pro Cycling kit has gone on sale today.

Priority access is being given to people who joined Rapha Cycling Club on or before last Sunday, or who have renewed a lapsed membership since then.

Roubaix reaction

It’s 2020, of course it will rain and we’ll all miss the first muddy Roubaix in 20years.

Tony Martin TT suit anyone?

Everyone loves a bit of UCI fines-based humour, right?

From the Head of Performance at Team Jumbo-Visma:

For sale: limited edition TT suits of the living legend @tonymartin85 (2000CHF each) pic.twitter.com/Ts618ZPZiS

— Mathieu Heijboer (@m_heijboer) October 9, 2020

Martin was fined 2000CHF during the Tour de France because while former world champions may wear rainbow bands on the collars and cuffs of their jerseys, his long-sleeved skinsuit had the bands midway up his sleeves.

E-scooter test group recommends you just buy a bike

A Belgian consumer test group has concluded that anyone currently looking to buy an e-scooter should probably just buy a bike.

Cycling Industry News reports that 11 e-scooters were tested with an average price point between €300 and €400.

According to one of the testers: “Based on our test results, we do not recommend a purchase. If you really want to invest in a mobility solution, we recommend an (electric) bicycle or folding bicycle.”

One of the main complaints related to waterproofing, with 10 of the 11 stating in the instruction manual that they should not be used in the rain.

More expensive models tend to flag water resistance on spec sheets.

Why (and how far) drivers really drive

From death-threat attracting defender of low traffic neighbourhoods, Hackney councillor Jon Burke.

We know from Department for Transport data what most private car drivers use their cars for… pic.twitter.com/uZtFoDpqch

— Cllr Jon Burke (@jonburkeUK) October 9, 2020

Frankly, that’s their own business. But, choosing to drive is not a neutral act. It imposes air pollution, noise, disruption, and road safety costs on everybody else. It’s not my job to facilitate unjust circumstances like this; it’s my job to minimise these problems.

UCI refers Dolticini-Van Eyck inappropriate conduct case to its disciplinary commission

In March, the French Cycling Federation asked the UCI to launch an investigation after two female riders on the Doltcini-Van Eyck team made allegations of inappropriate conduct against Marc Bracke.

The riders claimed that they were asked to send pictures of themselves in underwear to their male sports director so that he could check that they weren’t “too fat”.

The UCI today announced that its Ethics Commission concluded that violations of the UCI Code of Ethics had been committed.

The case has now been referred to the UCI Disciplinary Commission, which has initiated disciplinary proceedings.

Amsterdam's approach to on-street parking

Following on from that ‘free parking’ thing from this morning…

WATCH: Amsterdam is removing 10,000+ parking spaces for cars in their centre city, to make more room for people-places, walking, & biking. This great @Streetfilms video explains why & how.

    Jon Burke’s post on car

Jon Burke’s post on car distance journies; I think we are all quite familiar with the stats. But it never fails to confound. 13% drive less than 1km. That is the equivalent of getting into the car and driving to the top of the road. It’s  one thousand metres or less! WTF does that on a regular basis – or ever?

@Pub bike - well, off-road (ICE) motorbikes have been available for decades, so you're right about the proposed law being too narrow. I've seen scrotes riding them in parks and on the roads, but they're much less common than the newer e-motorbikes.

Pub bike 4 hours ago

@hawkinspeter I think my point buried in there somewhere is that the law being devised is too narrowly focused around electric bikes/motorbikes and it should encompass the sale of any kind of motorbike. The wording talks about "electrically assisted" which would seem to exclude throttle controlled bikes. The bikes I saw that had no pedals - and therefore the electricity does not assist but is the sole source of propulsion - would fall outside of this legislation, so already there is a loophole. It would probably help to have some technical input to this bill by people that actually understand the differences between bicycles, e-bikes, EAPCs and motorbikes before it goes too far.

It’s a nuanced proposition, for sure. I did start the article with “There are few hills I’m truly up for dying on, but kickstands on bikes is one of them” - and no comment here has changed my mind 😎

@jackcycles - no it reflects the reality that most folk are scared to cycle because of inconsiderate and dangerous drivers. Cycling numbers markedly increase when it is made safe to do so.

"Kickstands make every bike ride better" Can't think of any of my rides in the last few weeks that would have been "better" with a kickstand; a few that *might* possibly have been a bit more of a pain with one (especially with the amount of plant growth at the moment in the South West of the UK), but none it would have improved. So there we go, nice easy proof by contradiction.

I'll be surprised & amazed if all of those billions are actually delivered. I expect to hear, in a few years' time, that only a fraction of that was taken up for various reasons, & the rest was therefore diverted towards other 'number one issues'.

@Rendel Harris Going down the hill was usually Ok ish, it was coming back up that was the problem, especially at night. Near the top it narrowed with hedges on a low wall, not somewhere you would chose to ride on your own in the dark. Best time was race days when it is all stationary!
