Essex Town gets a visit from 'W*nksy', as local potholes are decorated with crude symbols

Residents of Wivenhoe, which is apparently known for its ‘creative arts scene’, have been treated to some life drawing on their neglected roads recently, as a host of phallic paintings have appeared around a number of the town’s most dangerous potholes. 

Wivenhoe ward councillor Mark Cory told the Gazette: “I can laugh at the new graffiti, but being let down for months and months by Essex County Council is more offensive to me.

“I have reported these potholes over the past year, they filled some, but left many to grow larger and more dangerous.

“It is unacceptable Essex County Council had to be shamed into action.”

An Essex Highways spokesman confirmed efforts would be made to do some ‘make safe’ repairs around the potholes and cover the graffiti, but insisted the best way to report road defects was by using Essex Council’s ‘report a pothole’ function on their website. He added: “Drawing pictures around defects in a road can be both distractingly dangerous to drivers and offensive to passers-by, especially children.

“It doesn’t make any difference to our road maintenance priorities as we deal with defects using a risk assessment process that enables us to deal with the worst problems first.”

If Essex Highways are prompted to act fast, it wouldn’t be the first time a glans-themed protest has succeeded in speeding up pothole repairs. Back in 2015, we reported on another anonymous anti-pothole campaigner based in Greater Manchester who claimed that his artwork was yielding results; however Bury Council said the clean-up jobs were costing money that could be used to repair roads.

As we reported yesterday, the 2019 world time trial champion was on track to defend her title in Emilia Romagna, but went straight over a barrier after losing control of her bike on a descent. The footage was terrifying and early reports last night suggested she was conscious and communicating with doctors, but Dygert appears to be through the worst after posting an update on social media this morning… although she’s been left with a monster gash on her left leg, and it’s a relief she didn’t attempt to get back on her bike.  

USA Cycling have also released a new statement on the 23-year-old’s condition, saying: “As a result of Chloe Dygert’s crash in today’s World Championship Time Trial, she has sustained a laceration to her left leg. She is out of surgery, resting comfortably and is expected to make a full recovery.

“Thank you everyone for the well-wishes and we ask that you please respect the privacy of [Chloé] and her family at this time.”

Ineos Grenadiers sign Richie Porte, and confirm Tom Pidcock rumours

The Australian, who just finished a career-best third at the Tour de France, will jump ship from Trek-Segafredo to join Ineos for 2021, reuniting him with the team he rode for under the Team Sky banner between 2012-2015. The team have also confirmed the signings of Tom Pidcock, Dani Martinez and Laurens De Plus. 

Last weekend Sir Dave Brailsford said he was looking to rebuild the team after a disappointing Tour de France, bringing in “some experience and some new young talent”; and these four transfers certainly fit the bill, after already confirming that Adam Yates will also join from Mitchelton-Scott. 

On Porte, Brailsford said: “Richie’s richly-deserved podium at the Tour de France once again demonstrated that he’s one of the best riders in the peloton. He’s a world class climber, time triallist, and if you are building a team to be competitive against the world’s best then you’d want Richie Porte by your side. 
 
“We already know how each other works, he knows how we race, and with the wealth of experience that Richie now has he has so much to offer the team. We really are extremely pleased to welcome him back!”

Pidcock is currently in Italy for his first world championships, most recently posting a course recce video to his Instagram Stories. He commented: “I am incredibly excited and proud to be signing for the Ineos Grenadiers. Like so many British cyclists of my generation, I have always aspired to race on the road with this team – to me, the best in the world.
 
“I just want to keep racing, learning and growing as a bike rider, and having the opportunity to do that in this team is amazing. I feel like I’m ready for the WorldTour but also excited to keep exploring multiple disciplines with the support of this team behind me.”

Ahmed Badreddin Wais of Syria is first to start the men's elite time trial at world champs

Wais has competed in the last three world championship time trials, and is first down the ramp this year. The 29-year-old fled Syria in 2014, reuniting with his family in Turkey before gaining refugee status in Switzerland. Due to the “physical and emotional toll” of his ordeal, Wais didn’t start competing again until 2017.

Should Annemiek van Vleuten race world championship road race with a broken wrist? Some people don't seem to think so

The defending world champion has insisted that doctors have assured her there is no greater risk is she falls on it again than before she suffered the fracture; but some on social media have said that riding on with the injury could be setting a bad example.

I don’t like how this sport champions injured cyclists as “heroes” and “warriors” for riding through an injury that they should be looking after.

A broken wrist here, a punctured lung at the TDF. At some point we need to discuss where the line is between warrior and dangerous..

Voi will pay for police to patrol e-scooter trial in Birmingham after reports of anti-social riding

The e-scooter firm Voi recently won a contract for the largest share scheme in Europe, that was set to expand across the West Midlands; but after numerous complaints about alleged near misses with pedestrians, the scheme was suspended in Coventry after just five days, and Voi are now funding police patrols in Birmingham to monitor usage. 

Voi say their scooters are “safe, convenient and environmentally friendly” but add that “a few anti-social people” were “deliberately and persistently breaking the rules”, report Birmingham Live. Voi will now cover the costs of the extra police work needed to increase patrols, which will include checking users are sober and that they hold a valid licence, in accordance with the UK’s e-scooter trial rules. 

A Voi spokesperson said: “We are passionate about shaping cities for people, reducing pollution and breaking traffic gridlock across Europe and now in the U.K. But we can only do this if people treat this new form of transport with care and responsibility.”

Least surprising news story of the day: Ineos boss (and staunch Brexiter) Sir Jim Ratcliffe moves to Monaco

We’re sure it’s because he just wants to be closer to Monaco residents Geraint Thomas and Chris Froome* to go for some nice bike rides, but in any case it’s been confirmed that Britain’s richest man is swapping Britain for the tax-free microstate.

The Guardian report that Ratcliffe changed his tax domicile from Hampshire to Monaco earlier this week, which will save him around £4 billion a year in tax payments according to estimates. Imagine how many Richie Portes and Tom Pidcocks he could sign for the Ineos Grenadiers with all that extra spare cash?

*Until January 2021 when he moves to Israel Start-Up Nation anyway

Phillip Schofield says he would "not think about" riding a bike without a helmet during This Morning segment... despite footage of a 2014 quad bike ride suggesting otherwise

Schofield was interviewing Luke Griggs, chief executive of the brain injury charity Headway, about improving the safety of e-scooters; when according to Headway, the presenter made it known that he “felt strongly about making helmets compulsory when riding e-scooters and bikes” due to the experience of a family member. 

During the segment on This Morning, Schofield said the family member suffered life-changing brain injuries following a bike accident, saying: “I would not think about going on my bike without my helmet. 

“We have an extended member of the family who had an accident on a bike and sustained life-changing brain injuries, so it is inconceivable for me.”

“And also the money it costs the National Health Service a year, for people who have been riding bikes without a helmet on and have brain injuries because they did not have a helmet.” 

According to various tabloids, people on social media flocked to agree with Schofield, saying that e-scooter and bike riders should be made to pay ‘road tax’ and wear helmets, amongst other laws that are yet to exist. Although, we couldn’t help but spot that he caused a bit of a helmet row himself back in the summer of 2014…

We’re not sure if Mr Schofield thinks that quad bikers should be exempt from helmet-wearing, or if he’s had a complete U-turn on the issue in recent years; but luckily it appears he managed to come through this ride without burdening any health services in the UK or the Algarve…

    Ratcliffe, a petrochemicals magnate with an estimated £17.5bn fortune, has this week officially changed his tax domicile from Hampshire to Monaco, the sovereign city-state that is already home to many of the UK’s richest people.

    Ratcliffe, who owns 60% of Ineos, has seen his personal fortune increase from an estimated £9.5bn in January 2019 to £17.5bn today, according to the Bloomberg billionaires index. That estimated wealth has increased by £1.25bn so far this year despite the coronavirus pandemic.

          Monaco has an associate

          Monaco has an associate agreement with he EU which means that Monaco is part of the Eurozone, is a member of the internal market, has freedom of movement and is part of the common EU VAT system. So of course it makes sense to move one’s ‘HQ’ to a Principality that enjoys all the benefits of being part of the richest free market on ther planet and of the largest union of democratic nations on the planet. As a successful business man he will know that there is no sense keeping a HQ in a non member state.

            A firm in which he owns a stake but takes no part in investment decisions has set up an Irish subsidiary.

            They also have subsidiaries in other tax havens.

            The firm remains based in the UK.

    London has experienced a doubling in motor traffic on quiet C roads since 2008, while in most other parts of the UK polluting motor traffic has increased more greatly on residential streets than on A or B roads.

    Motoring organisations and anti-traffic campaigners blame the internet. The AA president Edmund King has highlighted the rise of online deliveries, while urban liveability experts point the finger at smartphones and satnav apps including shortcutting app Waze.

    Another reason is bloat. In 2007, there were 27m registered motor vehicles in the UK. There are now 38.3m, with experts predicting numbers will rise above 40m within the next two years. Even if all new cars and vans were powered by batteries rather than fossil fuel, that would not solve congestion or reduce road danger, say campaigners.

    Oh dear, it would appear that Headway haven’t had enough publicity lately, so are running another of their tedious “Wear a helmet or die.” campaigns.  First they got on BBC’s Crimewatch with an entirely irrelevant, crime-free article, now they’ve done the same with ITV.  Do charities have to be factual and accurate?  Mind you, their claims are so insubstantial, fact-free and vague that they would be difficult to disprove.

    Note in both cases the absence of any counter argument, which should be not only allowed, but mandated, according to the BBC’s own rules.  Does ITV have a similar commitment to accuracy and opposing views?

    The news is based on the results of a survey in England of more than 2 million people, including over 27,000 people who described themselves as gay, lesbian or bisexual.

    It found that sexual minorities were two to three times more likely to report having longstanding psychological or emotional problems and significantly more likely to report fair/poor health than heterosexuals.

    Who’s using up NHS resources? double whammy I suppose if you’re gay, helmetless cyclist…..

    fwiw no I dont think van Vleuten should ride in this case, and its a decision she should have been mature enough to make herself, or at the very least the Dutch team should have made for her if she isnt able to see the whole picture. I get why she wants to do it,probably feels she has the fitness & form from the Giro Rosa, and can block the pain out,and with her age you cant ever predict if some bigger injury promptly just finishes your career anyway.

    But I know from my own experience broken bones in hands however tiny and insignificant they may seem, dont heal themselves overnight, do cause alot of pain still this soon after breaking them and it does impact your ability to grip a set of handlebars, let alone use the brake or change gear properly with it. I couldnt even hold a coffee mug with a handle for months afterwards, and it still aches years later in the colder weather after several hours out on the bike.

    plus regardless of what her doctors say, they cant guarantee she wont worsen the injury, because they cant guarantee how a crash may occur. I just think she has nothing to prove, she already is a world champion,so what does she gain from it even if she wins, they dont give you extra rainbows for doing it carrying an injury.

I'll counter that by saying the Bryton 750se I have drives me nuts at times. Inconsistantly picks up on routes created on Komoot and the app re-syncs every few seconds when trying to set up the device and sends me back to the home screen. The most infuriating one is that I turned live track on. Once. It now won't turn off and repeatedly flags up the live track is starting, and then disconnecting every few seconds whilst riding. I haven't timed it but it wouldn't suprise me if 10-20% of the time the the screen is covered with an error message. That's been about 6 weeks now. Other than that it's great :/

What is the point of the fancy air sensor if it can't account for changing weather conditions?? If all you care about is a delayed approximation of aerodynamic watts in steady conditions, you don't need any special sensors for that. Just your speed on a decently flat course is enough to approximate rolling resistance and drivetrain losses. And the rest must be aero. If you assume a less aero body position at the same watts, your speed will drop while rolling resistance also drops, which means approximated aero watts goes up. And that's enough to demonstrate what you've shown in your testing protocol ("I sat upright and the number went up a little while later").

Your correction is accurate - it's almost always been "the (lack of) thought that (doesn't) count". "Massive" - less than a billion a year spent on active travel (trying to catch up / building a network across the entire country) Not massive - 6 billion every year (2026-2030) spent on road *maintenance* of existing "already built, goes everywhere, very convenient" road network for inactive travel Ultimately the reason "cycle infra" is *needed* is those unbelievably colossal amounts spent every year (and for more than a century now) on making mass motoring not just viable but apparently the "best choice" for most journeys. As the Dutch and others have shown, the majority of people *are* prepared to cycle and even mix with very light, slow local motor traffic *if* cycling is also made safe and convenient for the whole of their journey (including secure parking at both ends). (The history of the financial drivers of the current situation are a complex topic but note that while people complain about "crumbling roads" and underfunded motor infra - with some reason - by us continuing the fuel duty escalator freeze (for example) we're actually helping motorists pay *even less* for that activity / subsidising more of the cost of driving than ever.)

So ' Priority of Road Users' and 1.5 metre clearance at 30mph has been been reduced to 'sharing'? NCN route 2 here in South Hams is an absolute scream with white vans, tractors and total idiots who refuse,or are totally incapable,to reverse on high Devon banked lanes ...means you have to get off and pedal back to a passing place....could be at that all day...so I don't bother...

@MaxiMinimalist Agreed. The big problem I see now is today's parents grew up being driven to their schools, and therefore, see private motor vehicles as the only viable form of transport. The vast majority of UK infant and primary schools have a catchment area that is within easy walking distance from home to school. Yet, the traffic caused by pupils being driven to/from school is astonishing. Banishing the "School Run" should be a priority for all schools.

When I was a kid (that was during the previous millenium when phones were connected to a plug in the wall), I rode my bicycle to school, music academy, sport grounds, parties even during the winter. The government didn't have to spend, correct that, didn't have to think of spending massive amounts of money to build cycling specific infrastructures. Over the past 3 or 4 decades, cars have grown bigger, taller, safer (for their drivers) and faster. Meanwhile, motorists have become abusive, aggressive, hypersensitive to people moving on two wheels, aka cyclists. Spending billions upon billions on new infrastructure won't address the crux of the matter. Sadly.
