Concerns have been raised over the safety of riders competing in the UCI Road World Championships in Doha after live TV coverage of today’s men’s under-23 time trial showed an ambulance driver coming very close to colliding with Germany’s Marco Mathis.
The 22-year-old, who rides for UCI Continental team Rad-Net Rose, was approaching the entrance to a roundabout and seeking the straightest line through it when the driver of the ambulance veered into his path, missing him by inches.

The event is still ongoing, with Mathis currently occupying first place, with around 40 riders left to roll down the start ramp at the time of publication.
