Stan’s has released Rolled Gold, a new tubeless sealant designed specifically for the higher pressures and weight-conscious demands of road and gravel riding. The company says its new natural-latex formula can seal punctures up to 7.8mm at 100 psi while requiring as little as 35ml per 700c x 28mm tyre, potentially saving you a little weight without compromising puncture protection.
We’re very used to brands claiming their new bikes, wheels and other components are the lightest out there – happens all the time – but the lightest tyre sealant? That’s an interesting one.
Stan’s has been the most widespread tubeless sealant brand for many years, with Rolled Gold intended specifically for road and gravel use. It is a high-latex, water-based formula and Stan’s reckons the fact that you can use as little as 35ml (in a 28mm tyre) is an advantage. In comparison, it says you’d need 50ml of Stan’s Original, while the average amount required of competitor tubeless sealants is 55ml. A saving of 30-40ml across the two wheels of your bike is tiny, but marginal gains and all that, we guess.
Stan’s says, “Rolled Gold’s new, lower-viscosity formula is paired with 100% natural latex rather than synthetic alternatives, giving it improved adhesion to rubber and tyres’ casing fibres that synthetic latex can’t match — and because it isn’t derived from petro-chemicals, it’s a more sustainable choice, too. Combined with a high-latex, high (but small) particle content, the formula is built for both speed and reliability.”
Natural latex is plant-derived and renewable and is said to be sustainably sourced, meeting EUDR standards for being deforestation-free.
Stan’s Mike Bush says, “Rolled Gold is a high-performance road and gravel sealant requiring less material to seal at a faster rate, making it the lightest, fastest sealant ever.
“From our experience in this market and from listening to Stan’s riders, we realised we could deliver a superior product for road cyclists that required less sealant – thus saving weight – yet with the same reliability as our Race Day product, plus you can inject this through the valve. So there are no sacrifices.”
Rolled Gold doesn’t replace Stan’s other sealants – they remain in the lineup. Stan’s Original is designed to be “the dependable, versatile choice for everyday riding across disciplines, delivering trusted protection at a slightly more accessible price point, though its higher-volume fill adds weight and isn’t optimised for the higher pressures road and gravel riders run”.
Race Day, on the other hand, is “engineered with a higher quantity of, and larger, latex particles for maximum puncture protection in the most demanding conditions, but that particle size limits it from being injected through the valve, adding weight and an extra installation step most road and gravel riders don’t need”.
Rolled Gold is made specifically for higher-pressure road and gravel tyres and is said to seal as well as Stan’s other sealants. It is injectable through the valve.
A 60ml size is priced at £5.50, 125ml is £10, and 500ml is £27. We have some in for review on road.cc.
Stan’s UK distributor is Upgrade Bikes.
