British e-bike manufacturer EBCO has just sent in its new M-45 hybrid e-bike to the eBikeTips office for testing.
It features a city-friendly low step frame made of sturdy T6 alloy, and integrates its 400wh battery into the rear rack assembly instead of the traditional location in the underside of the downtube, giving the M-45 a distinctly un-e-bike-ish look to it.

The motor is a TranzX F-15 model that sits within the hub, and this in conjunction with the battery unit produces a claimed 30-50 miles of range with a max assistance of 25km/h. The system is integrated with a CanBus/Logix diagnostic system to assist dealers with servicing.
Shimano provides a Nexus 7-speed drivetrain with a 19t sprocket married to a 38T chainset – all protected by a Chainglider guard – and stopping is taken care of using Tektro Promax rim brakes. With disc brakes becoming more and more the norm these days, especially on e-bikes, we’re keen to see if rim brakes can still cut it, bearing in mind that you can get discs in this price bracket.
Up front we find a steel fork that’s designed to be rigid for stable handling, and it comes fitted with Kenda K Puncture Shield 40mm tyres. They’re wide enough to provide plenty of comfort alongside the frame and fork, and they come with the reassurance of an ‘iron cap’ puncture protection belt too.
A comfort-oriented saddle is also present, with ergonomic handlebars and a 31.6mm micro-adjust seat post. Naturally, being a city bike, front a rear lights are integrated, as are mudguards and a kickstand.

All in, it’s said to weigh 24kg including the battery unit that sits inside the rear rack assembly, and will cost a not-at-all unreasonable £1,399.
