Residents of Denbigh are outraged by a plan to build a cycle path alongside a cemetery in town.
The Vale of Clwyd cycle route and the Denbigh walking and cycling network have been under consultation, and this week it was announced that a planning application would be submitted next year despite “strong opposition” to the route alongside Ystrad Road Cemetery.
According to the North Wales Daily Post, Denbighshire Council is in favour of the sustainable travel route despite concerns that cyclists would be passing as burial ceremonies were carried out.
According to the consultation document: “The route follows the former railway line past playing fields and Denbigh High School on the left to pass beneath a minor road and a cemetery on the right with backs of gardens directly on the left.”
The Denbigh Town Plan, drawn up by the council, highlights the need for residents being able to commute ‘safely and sustainably to jobs which are available elsewhere’, an aim that brought them to the consultation on the bike path.
Ian Evans, who lives nearby said: “I find it disgusting and disrespectful that Denbighshire Council are actually proposing to put the cycle track on the grounds of the cemetery on Ystrad Road.
“It’s bad enough putting it slap bang at the back our properties let alone on top of a place of rest.
“I’m all for a cycle track but please DCC be a little sympathetic as to where it goes.”

The strip of land is an old track bed of a disused railway is on land owned by the council which the residents have been trying to buy to extend gardens and has been deliberately left open not to become part of the cemetery. The railway was originally bought after Beeching closed it by the old Council to build a new relief road around Denbigh on it but in the end chose a greenfield route in the 70’s. The new route would be a great asset to the area almost certainly increase cycling locally both for recreation as well as commute-lite as it will pass the High School which lies near by. These residents organised a similar hate campaign in the 90’s which saw large bill boards of white elephants alongside the A525 and published letters from residents alongside cycle paths elsewhere in the UK that experienced video players and other items being stolen by passing thieves on bikes. The Daily Post hates cyclists anyway. Fight fire with fire and riders write the post to express support

I read the whole report, failed to find the offending bit of path going past the cemetery, but was impressed by the overall plan. Just over a 100km away from me, so could be there in time for lunch with a reasonably early start. And be looking for B&Bs and places to buy cake.
It’s a beautiful part of the world, and things like this would encourage me to visit and spend a few days and some money there.

Having read what Max_headset says and looking at google earth it does look like a good plan. The cemetery appears to be bordered by mature trees (legacy from the railway perchance?). So no chance of disturbance there. I do think the issue is that some of the residents of the estate backing onto the track bed are a bit miffed that they have been unable to purchase this land as their original gardens appear to have been built on with extensions and whatever.

I like the pre victorian idea
I like the pre victorian idea on cemetery’s being a public space where you can enjoy parties and fetes and include your deceased loved ones in feast days community events ect. Life goes on and it was Victoria and the years she spent mourning that made the general public forget the celebration of life in favour of constant boo hooing for the dead.

and in the daily post picky the cycle track is not that bit of track in the foreground its that large strip of green by the houses in the background.. as ever the delightful Kelly picks up a story from the disgruntled resident, does some research on facebook, fails to contact the guy from the Council and slants the story against big brother at the council. . hoping the controversy might raise falling sales in Denbigh of the next few issues.They used to allow readers to comment on web site stories but the facility was removed to reduce options to criticise them.

And what is the difference compared to people walking in graveyards? Or should they need appointments? AFAIK they are public spaces and indeed anyone can turn up to a funeral – if that’s their want (unless the ANC ban you). It’s completely spurious nonsense with a clear self-interested and spiteful agenda.

Just thought I would post this update a year later…… In the end shock horror the Planning Committee ignored officer advice and voted against it. Will try to get list of councillors that voted against in case you get the chance next election to vote them out.
