On yer bike! Anti-cycling candidates defeated in US midterm elections; Police and BBC continue to misidentify e-bikes + more on the live blog

Anti-cyclists ousted

All politics is local, all stories have an angle. Many Brits, and indeed millions of Americans who fancied an early night, might be waking up in some shock as to the results in the US midterm elections, where Democrats have pulled off their biggest victory since at least the Watergate-wave more than 50 years ago.

There are all sorts of nuggets to take away from these elections, my favourite stat from a late night of number-watching and social media scrolling is that the last time a Democrat won a Senate seat in Kansas, Babe Ruth hit his called shot in the famous Baseball World Series of 1932. That’s a while ago.

> Donald Trump cancels grants for bike lanes because they’re “hostile to motor vehicles”

Anyway, this is road.cc and we do bicycles. And, with Republicans suffering very bad defeats, a number of anti-cycling advocates have been defeated.

Remember Brandon Herrera? The ‘gunfluencer’ who said he’d “thought about ways I could get away with” killing cyclists? He lost his race to enter Congress by around 20,000 votes, despite Donald Trump previously winning in the district (Texas’ 23rd) at a canter.

> “I had f**king fantasies of running them all over – and maybe one of these days I will”: Clip resurfaces of Republican candidate’s horrifying anti-cyclist rant

There’s also Joe Mitchell, candidate for a similarly conservative district in Iowa, who had some strong words about bike lanes and the people who use them when he campaigned with the President a few weeks ago…

Joe Mitchell: “Thank God you’re building the ballroom. Thank God you’re getting rid of those awful bike lanes. We don’t ride bicycles in Iowa.”

— Aaron Rupar (@atrupar.com) 23 October 2026 at 02:39

You wonder if Mitchell was maybe entirely aware of his electorate, considering Iowa is the home of one of the biggest, most popular bike-touring events in the world – the Register‘s Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa –or RAGBRAI for short. I doubt they take too kindly to Harley’s on that route. It’s so big it’s even an event we covered back in 2013 when a certain Texan took part – in a strictly non-competitive sense…

> Lance Armstrong to join 10,000 other cyclists in mass participation event in Iowa

Speaking of Iowa, one keen cyclist did lose their election. Republican candidate for governor Zach Lahn was known to frequently go on bike rides around his home, only deleting his Strava once media cottoned on to the fact he didn’t live in the state he was seeking to represent.

The app’s geo-tracking showing him living in Kansas consistently right until he announced his run for office. At least he’ll now have time on his hands to get back out on the open road…

> US political candidate’s bike rides on Strava show he doesn’t live in state he’s running to lead

And finally, thanks to the wonders of timezones, we won’t know the results in the Los Angeles mayoral race for a little while, but incumbent Karen Bass, a Democrat, has found herself in something of a dogfight with her opponent after having the nerve in a debate to accuse Nithya Ramen’s supporters of wanting cycle lanes. We’re not sure that’s the withering putdown she thought it was…

Major gotcha moment from the NBC Los Angeles mayoral debate: Mayor Bass says many supporters of Nithya Raman’s campaign are advocates for bike lanes!!

Duh!! Of course! Bike lanes save lives! 🚲🌴

One of these days, we hope cycling will not be seen as a political hot-button issue for candidates to seek grievances over. Until then, we’ll be here ready and waiting to report on the demise of their political aspirations…

Vuelta supermarket swept away

Remember when the Vuelta a Espana started a stage in a supermarket? It’s not quite a Monte Carlo casino yet also feels quintessentially cycling, a sport reliant on overt commercialism and marketing in a way we don’t associate with many other sports. It’s just not cricket, for example.

Well, the bad news is that ASO have announced Carrefour will no longer sponsor the Vuelta red leader’s jersey. The good news is another supermarket have stepped up to fill the void!

Not content with the Deustchland Tour or their own team, into which they’re pouring as many euros in as they are potential leaders, Lidl have taken up the mantle, meaning hopefully fun photos like this aren’t consigned to the past just yet.

Welcome aboard, Lidl! ❤️

We’ll be able to find out if either the men’s or women’s race decides to utilise the German discount supermarkets wide aisles and generous bakery section when the routes are unveiled next month, although the likelihood of the route impacting which major favourites line up for the race is rather slim due to the world championships taking place beforehand.

Triathlon training in earnest?

Kiko Galvan bunnyhop

Kiko Galvan’s career as an influencer has shown no signs of slowing down since he “paused” his pro career in light of some outright dangerous behaviour whilst training.

> “A mistake has consequences, and I’m paying for them”: Pro cyclist “kicked off team” and pauses cycling career over dangerous bunny-hopping video

Instead, he now spends his days riding his bike for fun, occasionally falling in a river for our amusement…

It’s big, stable and comfy enough but somewhat let down by the terrible bottle holster, fiddly Fidlock buckle and waist adjustment.

This is a shocking case and should raise the question could this driver have been stopped earlier? So many convictions, why was he still behind the wheel? The sentence does fit the crime in this case, but had the driver stopped after the initial collision, would they have even been jailed? I can't help thinking about the BBC program "The Crash Detectives", where about 14 mins into "Season 5 Episode 3: Fair to all parties" the police embark on what seems an exercise to exonerate the driver, with some ridiculous reasoning such as "the victim's reflective jacket is so bright it makes their front light difficult to see", conflicted by "ah, but the victim's reflective jacket might not have been as bright, so probably harder to see for the driver". In that case the driver faced "no further action". The gulf in outcomes is extreme where deaths on our roads are concerned.

@yodhrin A brilliant story told by one Ed Solomon: he was sitting in a café in LA and he heard two young ladies arguing over a point in the original Men in Black movie. "I can help clear that up for you," he said to them. "Thanks," came the reply, "we don't actually need an explanation from a middle-aged white guy to tell us what to think." "Okay, no problem," said Solomon and went back to his coffee. Ed Solomon wrote the screenplay for the original Men in Black movie.

Yes all the post war clearances & developments with the car centre stage is / was pretty universal. I think it helps that the NL is pretty flat & easy going so historically has very many cyclists from all ages & walks (or should it be rides) of life, who wanted to keep pedalling & presumably built up a lobbying force to save what they still had & build it back up. I notice the flatter UK towns have far more cyclists than much of West Yorkshire, although York's not too bad. If I lived in a flatter place I would cycle more; I dont mind hill climbs but you always arrive at your destination with a sweat on! The hilly nature is probably still a physical barrier for many resulting in fewer cyclists & lower use of cycle lanes - to be fair most of the lanes are on easier gradient routes, more likely to be used. There's none on the steep climb to our area which as its a dual carriageway is not much fun & feels a lot safer on the footpath. Overall it seems to be more of a sport activity here, rather than mum or dad or gran popping out for a quick shop or kids cycling to school. There are some pretty fierce climbs in most directions. Also the "broken" routes where C lanes stop & start awkwardly, usually at junctions, means you cannot just flow along, you have negotiate some tricky bit of kerbed channel with tight bends or something. All there with safety in mind I'm sure but not good cycling. Its easy to see why some cyclists who just want to crack on with their ride, don't use them. (Not just the freestyle lads who cycle thru every set of lights or diagonally across busy junctions regardless). The C lanes are always subservient to cars, I think largely for economic reasons; so many have to travel miles to get to work & for all its faults the car does the job but of course there are many counter arguments. I heard the NL have experimented in a few smaller towns with removing all kerbs & signage (?) etc so cars no longer have priority. I dont know how successful it has been. I've been in Indian towns where few rules were followed & seemed like an insane free for all, virtually constant gridlock, which I'm not convinced was an improvement! Even with a million pound cycle lane in the park, with all the best intentions, how much difference will it make, given human propensity to do what suits us best regardless of others. Who is going to police it, presuming that the current / previous free for all presumably was not policed? (This obvs is a wider issue) Have there been a spate of cyclist - pedestrian accidents that raised the notion of formal laning? Was it pedestrians who wanted to reduce cycling risks for themselves or the reverse? Is it a minority pressure group/s getting their way when the general park using public actually have other concerns such as better lighting & personal safety & actually arent bothered about the cycling issue either way? I should read up on it I guess!

@eburtthebike The normalisation of lifetime bans would be a good start to changing perception back to the pre-war understanding that driving is a privilege, not a right. And then a reinforcement of Sentencing guidelines can get underway, with a focus on "does the offender pose a continued risk to society?" In the case of the 15y/o's, their parents may not be culpable for the life changing injuries, but they are responsible for neglecting their kids to give them access to such egregious weapons on two wheels. CPS just needs to look further than ends of their noses and i doubt they'll fail to find substantive evidence of negligence.

@qwerty360 Thanks for this info. I've had two failure to identify in my reporting "career". One got away with it completely as it was a hire car through two different companies and they ran out of time to prosecute and one got points and a fine. The latter was NMOTD 946. I won't put a link in or you may never see this comment. If I've had two it must be quite common occurrence. Yet another loophole condoned by the legal system for the well off and unscrupulous.

@stulemanski wrote It depends on the situation but generally I prefer to stay on my bike as it takes up less room than walking by the side of it with pedals ready to catch the ankles of other pedestrians. If it's a no cycling area then it's get off and walk unless it is completely deserted. As for driving in cycle lanes be prepared to be pissed off and be prepared for the police to take no action when you report it with video evidence.

Yes I'm managing to avoid it. Living 60 miles away really helps there... The change to pedestrianisation happening when there isn't a plan for the large number of cyclists in London is really regressive.
