Estarli has unveiled a new E-cargo Longtail 2.0 electric bike with a maximum load capacity of 250kg, a redesigned lower-step frame for easier use, and the Estarli Cycle Systems mid-drive motor and Enviolo drivetrain that are intended to provide “exceptional hauling and climbing capability under load”. Designed and built in Hertfordshire, Estarli sees it as both a family vehicle and a replacement for day-to-day car journeys. The base-build price is under £3,000.

250kg, huh? That’s a quarter of a tonne. It covers the bike, rider, passengers and cargo. To put that in terms that we all understand, 250kg is about three average-sized UK men… or a Bengal tiger. A lot, then.

Estarli describes this as a “class-leading load capacity” and says that the new model has been developed from over two years of retailer and rider feedback.

As well as the 250kg load capacity and lower-step frame design, Estarli says the new E-cargo Longtail 2.0 offers:

  • Optional 820Wh long-range battery
  • Edge-to-edge display
  • Improved front suspension with ring-lock compatibility
  • New utility-focused accessories
  • Improved stand stability
  • Enviolo drivetrain technical improvements
  • Optional Dutch handlebars [£50]

Estarli is also offering new collapsible pannier bags, while a Utility Basket designed for shopping and pets is on the way at an estimated price of £50.

We’re particularly interested in how Estarli has moved things forward because the original E-cargo Longtail got a top 10 finish in the electric bikes category of the road.cc Recommends Bikes of the Year 2024/25. We called it: “The best value longtail out there given the awesome climbing power.”

So what has Estarli been up to with this redesign?

As we’ve mentioned, the headline change is the increased load capacity – up from 210kg to 250kg – so you can comfortably carry two or three children, or a serious amount of cargo.

The new lower-step frame is said to have been introduced in response to customer feedback to make it easier to get on and off the bike, particularly when managing children, cargo, or stop-start journeys.

“A number of usability improvements further enhance the experience,” says Estarli. “The Gated Family Cage – designed to safely and securely carry children – is now included as standard within the Family Pack, while an improved bike stand delivers greater stability when loading and unloading.

“Further family-focused enhancements include a new edge-to-edge display for improved visibility and interaction, alongside optional Dutch-style handlebars that deliver a more upright, relaxed riding position which has already proved popular with parents.”

The Longtail’s drivetrain is unchanged, with the Estarli Cycle Systems mid-drive motor and Enviolo gearing system delivering 110Nm of torque. Estarli says it “continues to offer exceptional climbing and hauling capability even at maximum load capacity”.

The standard battery is 600Wh with an approximate range of 30-60 miles, but you can go for the 820Wh long-range option, which should see you right for longer journeys (Estarli quotes a range of 43-66 miles, although it’ll depend on rider weight, cargo load, terrain, temperature and assist mode) and heavier use.

Estarli says, “New full-length collapsible pannier bags provide substantial additional storage for shopping, commuting and general transport duties, while an upcoming Utility Basket accessory – designed to integrate within the family cage – will allow riders to quickly convert the bike for heavier-duty cargo use when the school run is done. With a harness point, it also doubles as a handy pet carrier.”

The E-cargo Longtail 2.0 comes with an upgraded front suspension fork that offers ring-lock compatibility for those wanting quick security for shorter stops. Speaking of such things, Estarli Cycle Security is a £395 option, providing GPS tracking and recovery or replacement support.

“Additional upgrades include more durable and integrated mudguard stays, a redesigned rear mudguard, a new bell, gloss paintwork, and an improved battery layout for faster swaps and easier maintenance,” says Estarli.
