The Altura Airstream Unisex Cycling Socks are comfortable and breathable in cool-to-mild conditions. A refreshingly sensible price arguably places them among the best value, no-frills cycling socks available right now.

There isn’t much to say about cycling socks when they get things right, which is perhaps the greatest compliment you can pay them. They should be comfortable, stay in place, breathe reasonably well and not cost the earth.

Altura’s Airstream socks tick most of these boxes, making them an easy recommendation for anyone looking for a straightforward pair without the marketing fluff – or an eye-watering price tag.

There are six colourways, including all-black and all-white. I tested the grey version with a yellow cuff. The distinctly Livestrong-esque appearance won’t be to everyone’s taste – although perhaps I’m showing my age here and that reference means very little to some.

My only criticism of the lighter cuff is that it doesn’t stay looking particularly clean for long. On damp roads, expect it to develop a polka-dot pattern of road grime fairly quickly.

The socks have a decent leg length, although a little too long for my personal preference. That will, of course, be down to individual taste and the amount of calf you like to have on display though.

A ribbed weave is used at the sole, ankle and cuff. It’s reassuringly substantial. I’ve not noticed premature wearing or thinning – like any sock, if you don’t keep toenails trimmed, the fabric may suffer.

The upper foot is more of a mesh weave, helping with breathability. I personally wouldn’t consider the Airsteams exceptionally lightweight. Indeed, the additional substance provides a little extra cushioning underfoot.

They strike a good balance between not being overbearing or bulky and offering a degree of breathability, but above around 25°C, I found them uncomfortably warm.

I rode around in odd socks to see how the Airstreams stacked up against another ‘summer’ sock. The difference wasn’t huge, suggesting that while the Airstreams aren’t ideal for very warm weather, they are hardly outliers.

Arguably, the Airstream’s strongest selling point is the £12 price tag. Many riders have no reason to spend a small fortune on something that, ultimately, is a fairly simple item of clothing (unless you’re a pro – but then you get given them anyway).

Lusso and Van Rysel offer similar ‘sanely priced socks’ – indeed, Decathlon has several for under a tenner.

Everything else we’ve reviewed in recent times has cost over £15.

Overall

The Altura Airstreams make no extravagant claims. They are comfortable, reasonably breathable, well-made and sensibly priced. They aren’t the socks I’d reach for on a baking-hot summer day, but for cool to mild conditions they do the job very well. That means they will have you covered for outdoor riding for a good chunk of the year.

How does the price compare to that of similar products in the market, including ones recently tested?:

Certainly more affordable than most. The only other pair tested in the last 18 months that dip under £15 are from Universal Colours. Of those we haven’t tested, Lusso’s Paragon socks and Van Rysel’s are competitively priced.
