In November 2024, Canyon announced a safety recall for bikes equipped with Shimano batteries, specifically the Spectral:ON and Torque:ON, and ceased the sale of those models. After quite the wait, the brand’s trail and gravity e-mountain bikes have returned to the market, equipped with a fresh battery design.

The recall was issued after the brand noticed that the batteries these bikes were equipped with had the potential to develop cracks, which could then allow water and other nasty things that you don’t really want inside a battery’s casing. Canyon stated that it would be extremely unlikely, but there was a slim chance that these batteries could catch fire.

Now, after more than a year, Canyon has returned the Spectral:ON and Torque:ON into the wild, but with a new, and hopefully improved battery. Both bikes still run Shimano’s EP801 motor system, but each gets a smaller 800Wh battery. While that all sounds great, Canyon and Shimano have put in some extra legwork to make it an ‘industry-leading prospect’.

Canyon states that this new battery is one of the first complete aluminium batteries on the market, being housed and end-capped in the metal. Boosting protection against water ingress, all of its contacts are double-sealed, meeting a waterproof rating of IP57 and its been certified by SGS, having withstood extensive testing.

Inside, the battery has received a refresh to its cells, claiming that the battery is now more efficient. It now runs on 5.6Ah cells rather than the 5.0Ah cells of old. This means that there are fewer cells, which reduces weight and improves the bike’s centre of gravity, says Canyon. It’s also said that the new battery weighs 150g less than the 900Wh battery that was recalled.

If you’re in the market for a new Shimano-equipped e-MTB, the Canyon Spectral:ON and Torque:ON’s prices start at £3,749.
