Extra security for Cambridge's £2.5m CyclePoint as thieves target parts

Victim says security is ‘a joke’

Extra patrols have been introduced after the theft of saddles and wheels at Cambridge CyclePoint earlier this week.

Opened in February 2016 next to the city’s railway station, CyclePoint is Britain’s biggest cycle park with space for almost 3,000 bikes.

However, despite the presence of dozens of CCTV cameras, bikes have been stolen in the past and thieves now appear to be targeting parts.

Cambridge News last year reported that there had been 39 bike thefts from the Cyclepoint from when it opened to June last year. Ten of those had CCTV reviewed as part of the investigation.

Dr Katy Stubbs tweeted: “Some 'jokers' at Cambridge Station Cyclepoint removed saddles and wheels from loads of bikes today. Luckily I found my saddle, but other cyclists weren't so lucky. May have 84 CCTV cameras but security is a joke. Any bets on if @greateranglia will even review the footage?

She added: “It was only a saddle so no biggie for me, but the sheer number of bikes they'd done it to just shows how poor security is. I've known people to have bikes stolen from there with @greateranglia not doing anything.”

A Greater Anglia spokesperson said: “We are currently investigating the theft of saddles and wheels at Cambridge CyclePoint.

“Extra patrols will be carried out, however we encourage people to lock their bikes securely and report any crime to the police.

“Anyone who has been the victim of a crime or has witnessed a crime should contact British Transport Police on 0800 405040.

"Customers can look out for free cycle marking events in the area. When thefts do occur, we support the police with their investigations wherever possible.”

If there had been 39 cars stolen from a car park protected by so many video cameras, there would be an absolute storm of protest, but even bike infrastructure doesn't actually care about cyclists.
