At road.cc every product is thoroughly tested for as long as it takes to get a proper insight into how well it works. Our reviewers are experienced cyclists that we trust to be objective. While we strive to ensure that opinions expressed are backed up by facts, reviews are by their nature an informed opinion, not a definitive verdict. We don't intentionally try to break anything (except locks) but we do try to look for weak points in any design. The overall score is not just an average of the other scores: it reflects both a product's function and value – with value determined by how a product compares with items of similar spec, quality, and price.

Rather than a watered down version of its PROtecht1 Ultimate sibling, BG Innovations PROtecht2 advanced corrosion protection is a really clever hybrid of anti-corrosion protectant and lubricant that cures to a waxy, ceramic texture.

It's recommended primarily as a mothballing agent when storing equipment for long periods or protecting electrical components from harsh coastal climes, I've discovered a wealth of other uses for it too.

A frame is an obvious candidate. Whip out the seat post, deliver broad strokes inside the seat tube, repeat through the breathing holes using the straw before resting it on some old newspaper, to catch leakage.

A thin mist of Protecht2 cast from a distance of thirty centimetres seems ideal for seasonal storage, or maintaining lustre when plodding through winter. Apply extra coats at five minute intervals if you need them. It also doubled as a commendable assembly paste on seat posts/cradles, quill stems, derailleur threads, quick release skewers and cleat mechanisms too.

WHen it's fully dried it resisted being washed off in a normal bucket wash but could be removed using white spirit or the marque's own biodegradable degreaser.

Confounded by a badly behaved wireless cadence sensor I introduced a tentative squirt to its contacts and re-installed the threaded cap. Sure enough the zero flickered into positive figures, confirmed by subsequent laps of my lane.

A cloudburst of biblical proportions may have removed my wax based chain prep within forty miles but couldn't spoil connectivity even fully submerged for three. No surprise to find it also exorcises intermittent gremlins in hub and old-fashioned bottom bracket dynamos, budget blinkies with so-so seals/corroded contacts etc.

Superficially at least, generic maintenance sprays will achieve similar results and deserve their place in our workshops but their staying power isn't remotely comparable.

Protecht2 earned further brownie points as a surprisingly stoical chain lube - double ups returning 120 foul weather miles, and picking up markedly less contaminant than is usual with wet lubes.

Being a waxy formula, it does attract a thin layer of grime when applied externally, demanding more intensive clean up operations given a few weeks. Then again, this dirty disguise might be welcomed by those wanting to hide a pretty frameset from prying eyes.

Use and store in well ventilated/cool conditions away from sources of ignition. Garages/sheds/outbuildings with concrete flooring are ideal but whatever your arrangement, keep clear of drains, streams and aquatic life. Ceremony isn't required for internal duties e.g. frames, lock mechanisms, up n' over door rollers etc. Simply agitate the aerosol for thirty seconds or so and deliver in short, two-second bursts.

Verdict

An extremely versatile and effective corrosion inhibitor with lubricant properties.

Tell us how the product performed overall when used for its designed purpose

Arguably the most versatile of the two formulas, its waxy nature serves as a handsome internal preserve, makeshift assembly paste and does an excellent job of mothballing electrical contacts without interfering with connectivity or instigating galvanic corrosion.
