At road.cc every product is thoroughly tested for as long as it takes to get a proper insight into how well it works. Our reviewers are experienced cyclists that we trust to be objective. While we strive to ensure that opinions expressed are backed up by facts, reviews are by their nature an informed opinion, not a definitive verdict. We don't intentionally try to break anything (except locks) but we do try to look for weak points in any design. The overall score is not just an average of the other scores: it reflects both a product's function and value – with value determined by how a product compares with items of similar spec, quality, and price.

Protecht ultimate1 corrosion prevention was designed primarily for automotive uses. Its highly sophisticated and ultra-clean corrosion blocking prowess makes easy transition to cycling applications. It's good for protecting frames, accessories and tooling from corrosion whether they're hibernating in sheds or garages or soldiering on through winter's caustic brew.

BG innovations declined to talk specific ingredients but confirmed that it was intended for use on painted, plated, polished, anodised and composite surfaces. Working in broadly similar fashion to aerospace inhibitors, nanotech technology ensures comprehensive protection almost upon contact but hosts should be clean and dry to avoid sealing moisture in. All aerosols work to the same basic principle of a propellant expelling the solvent/carrier, which evaporates on contact, leaving the key ingredient behind.

Kitchens double as fabulous workshops. Food, drink, and running water are all on hand as we fettle, delivering those sneaky shots of Teflon TLC to cables, pivot points etc. However, Protecht is a seriously potent mixture that should only be used and stored in well ventilated areas - a combi boiler's pilot light is sufficient to trigger a serious explosion. Garage door wedged wide open and 80's road frameset in work stand, I gave the protect a vigorous thirty second shake before applying in short bursts into the seat tube, mesmerised momentarily by the rising haze.

Electroplate is very alluring but a horrific process that wakens already thin tubing - think trace amounts of residual acids nibbling away at their structural integrity over time. Swapping for the straw, I blasted some into the rear triangle's breathe holes. Splashes on bare skin don't burn like some specialist frame treatments that chemically leach into metals, though latex examination gloves and long sleeves are a wise precaution, especially for sensitive/damaged skin.

Doubting Thomases will scoff saying household water displacers will do exactly the same thing but their thin films are easily washed away and attract dirt. Turning my attention to the exterior, spraying a gentle mist over the shiny stuff sees it form a dry, invisible barrier within two minutes, which has obvious appeal for masking pretty working/winter steeds, especially those serving on turbo trainers. Same goes for aluminium alloys: fork ends, crank arms, mudguards and similar bright work. That said; I have minimised contact with weather seals and other rubberised components.

It's fairly economical too, treating four of my fleet, Yak pattern trailer and Joshua's BMX with the remaining 40% applied to my Ford Ka's more intimate, grot-prone regions. Curing to this dry state means it collects almost zero dirt, even after several weeks' spent negotiating soggy, silty back roads. Unlike clear DIY lacquers, there's no risk of it yellowing, peeling or indeed flaking and can be removed using their clever degreaser or a clean rag dipped in white spirit.

Verdict

Seriously impressive and surprisingly frugal preservative but let's see how it stands up to a harsh, coastal winter.

Tell us what the product is for, and who it's aimed at. What do the manufacturers say about it? How does that compare to your own feelings about it?

Protecht1 is an extremely innovative corrosion inhibitor. Aimed primarily at automotive audiences,it cures to a dry, clear state, thus forming an invisible barrier supposedly kind to all painted, plated, polished/anodised surfaces so not much of a conceptual leap to realise its potential in cycling contexts.

Tell us some more about the technical aspects of the product?

· Moisture repellent

· Salt/Acid resistant

· PROtecht1 gives a DRY transparent finish

Exceptional supplementary surface corrosion protection

· Nano-technology solution for corrosion protection.

Tell us how the product performed overall when used for its designed purpose

Protecht1 ultimate corrosion prevention is a truly remarkable product that cures to a clear state and hasn't dulled chrome, polished aluminium/similar brightwork. Unlike traditional waxed based inhibitors, it doesn't attract dirt and isn't washed away by heavy rains, shallow river crossings or generic bucket washes. Seemingly ideal for preserving ornate framesets in everyday service/storage,a harsh coastal winter will be very telling.

Bought a Velocite Flux and was told that Velocite UK recommended all of the BGi PRO range for use so I tried it.
Pleasantly surprised at how easy the cleaner is to use and especially pleased that there is no need to mask off any components as they say the PROclean-gold contains no acid or solvent- marvelous. Found it great at cleaning the braking surfaces too.
A few quick sprays of the PROtecht1 and the frame n wheels are protected and I can't say that I can see any difference in the finish - Amazing kit.
Have also tried the 2 and find this great for use when U know the mud is going to be up above the crank. Another tip I also applied on top of my normal chain lube, sort of locks it in and keeps water and dirt out.
I was also intrigued by a former post on similar products so checked with the guys at BG innovations and was assured that the 2 was good on surfaces up to 650 degrees Celsius - Amazing kit!
So assured I have now applied to my trusty old Kawasaki - another relatively easy job.
Here's to a clean and muck free winter, however & wherever I ride.

an alternative to protecht2 is a similar wax spray from scottoil (makers of the scott oiler - continuous chain lubricator).

+1 acf50
I've used acf 50 on every large (> 600cc ) bike i've ever had. mainly because stock components are rubbish and can't handle a british salty winter. it works.

There's also a Protecht2, which is wax-based.

An alternative to one or other - sounds nearer to protecht1 - is ACF50. Often used on motorcycles for the same reason, plus it's fine on hot surfaces like engine casings. The same bunch that produce ACF50 also do 'Corrosion Block' - dunno what the difference is.

Is it definitely ok for carbon? My supersix has an almost matte finish which picks up dirt even on dry days. Could be a great solution to that if it's safe to use.

Just ordered some to treat a new build. You need to add £3.50 to the price for P&P which makes it a bit pricier so let's hope it's good stuff when it arrives!
