Critical Mass ride claims Carlisle city centre

Fist demo of its kind (in Carlisle) highlights lack of facilities

A Critical Mass rush-hour ride in Carlisle took over the roads to campaign for better cycle facilities.

A group of 30 riders departed from West Walls and, waving banners, rode around the city, occasionally blocking off smaller side roads to give riders safe passage on their way.

Mark Lloyd was part of the ride and who has taken part in other Critical Mass protests in Kendal and Lancaster. This was the first time one has been held in Carlisle.

He said: “The idea is to take control of the roads for cyclists to encourage people to get out of their cars and cycle more, and to highlight how poor facilities in Carlisle are for cyclists.

“We want to make people more aware of cyclists and raise the profile of their problems.”

Heh, that's ancient though - C+ ran that pic in it's Crap Cycling Facilities Pt1472 feature which used to be on the letters page back at the turn of the century.

As memory serves though whoever sent it in said it was in Belgium - Bruges I think. Cycle lanes like that are probably all part of the programme to help them produce so many hard as nails cycling champions… natural selection.

Wherever it is though you'd certainly be proud to have a cycle lane like that in your town!

Come to Preston - we do have *some* cycle routes but they are not joined up and I resent having to use pedestrian crossings to get across a junction! slows you down
