The funeral has taken place in South London of former British heavyweight boxing champion Gary Mason, killed last month when he was struck by a van while out on a training ride on his bike in Wallington.
Among the mourners at the service yesterday at Carshalton All Saints Church were former world champions Lennox Lewis, the only man to have defeated Mason in his 38-bout professional career, and Frank Bruno.
The church service, which saw Mason described by his brother as a “gentle giant,” according to a report on the This Is Local London website, was followed by a private burial attended by Mason’s family at Croydon Cemetery.
Following Mason’s death, a 43-year-old male was arrested by police on suspicion of causing death by careless driving and has been bailed until March.
