Welcome to the road.cc Amazon Prime Day live blog
bargains gif

Just like that annual materialistic mayhem that is Black Friday, Amazon Prime Day has barged itself onto a spot on the calendar, as if the online retail goliath needed any more promotion.

We're always a bit conflicted about doing these live blogs — and while we've certainly got reservations about the delivery miles, mindless materialism and impact on small businesses — as a cycling website we wouldn't be doing our job if we weren't telling you when there are great deals and discount prices available on kit worth having.

So, if you want to, make the most of the two days of sales to bag something you were after, or in need of anyway. We certainly won't be walking away with a van's worth of stuff we didn't need, but this might just be the cheapest time of the year to get that bit of kit you've been after for a while. Or as another alternative, you could just pay the difference and support your local bike shop...

If you didn't know, you have to be an Amazon Prime member to take advantage of these sweet sweet bargains (or sign up for a free trial and set a reminder in your phone to cancel it before the 30 days are up, we won't tell Mr Bezos if you don't). We're also quite confident the products we've selected are genuinely priced lower than you'll find through the rest of the year, but if you've spotted any of them cheaper elsewhere let us know in the comments.

* You probably guessed it but we have to tell you: we may earn affiliate commission from some of the links you click on this page. Enjoy!

Take 18% off the Garmin Varia RTL515 Rearview radar and tail light, now £139.99
Garmin Varia RTL515

We did spot this for cheaper at Leisure Lakes Cycles yesterday, but it's now out of stock! If you missed out there then the Varia RTL515 is still priced lower than we've seen anywhere else at £139.99 with this Prime Day deal, down from £169.99.

The Garmin Varia RTL515 combines a radar and a rear light, providing awareness of vehicles approaching from behind up to 140 metres away. You may not think you need this but the Garmin will tell you that an object is going to overtake you before you can see or hear it, and without having to take your eyes off the road in front of you.

Our reviewer Iwein Dekoninck found that the light was bright and the radar worked well, both making him feel more safe on the road - you can check out the review here.

Shokz (formally AfterShokz) OpenMove & OpenRun headphones are 30% off during Prime Day. I find them really good for running & cycling. The "sweatproof" of the old TrekZ has never been a problem in the downpours I have run/cycled in.

(I don't want to get involved in the support your local bike shop/big business is bad debate, just letting anyone else who can't afford to pay full price, but still wants to get good quality product. and yes, the "good quality" is my experience, so others may have a different take on it)

Also re Topeak saddlebag, have a look at Carradice - it isn't all cotton duck and bag loops.

Or don't.

Why should we support a company that fails to pay its workers a fair share, has poor employment practices and does everything it can to get out of paying its fair share of tax: https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2023/jun/01/amazon-uk-services-ma...

A shameful company which no one who believes in society should use.

Hear Hear!

Every pound spent on Amazon is a pound sent out of your local economy, a pound taken away from people in your area and put into Jeff Bezos pocket. Your buying decisions are important, make them with intent.

Also, from a cycling perspective, Amazon's policies for its delivery drivers of pavement, cycle lane and other dangerous parking is putting our lives at risk. Financially supporting an organisation which actively risks our lives just to save a few pounds a year is a self defeating short term view we should all be avoiding.
