Police in Liverpool have launched an appeal for information after a cyclist was left in a critical condition when he was attacked by a group of men, one of whom is believed to have been wielding a hammer.
The assault happened on Victoria Road West, Crosby, at around 10.45pm on the evening of Saturday 2 November, reports the Liverpool Echo.
According to police the victim, a 22-year-old male was riding his bike when a group of men – one described as being of stocky build, aged in his 40s or 50s and with grey hair, the others as teenagers – got out of a small grey car.
They then subjected him to what was described as a vicious assault, with members of the public coming to the victim’s aid afterwards.
The cyclist remains in a critical condition in hospital.
Detective Chief Inspector Siobhan Gainer of Merseyside Police said: "This was a serious and violent assault which has left a man with significant injuries and I am determined to find the people responsible.
"Enquiries are currently being carried out into the circumstances of what took place in the lead up to this incident but I would ask anyone who saw the cyclist or the grey car, which was possibly a Volkswagen Golf, in the Crosby area, last night to contact us.
"A number of people in the area came to the cyclist's assistance following the assault but I would also like to speak to anyone who was driving past who may have seen or captured something significant on their dash-cam footage."
Anyone who has information is asked to send police a direct message to their Twitter account @MerPolCC, call officers on 101 or contact the charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111 quoting reference 19100640212.
