Two cyclists in Brazil got the 'freight' of their lives when they rode into a railway tunnel - and met a goods train coming straight towards them. Luckily, both managed to scramble to safety, leaving one of the bikes behind which they later retrieved as they continued their journey through the tunnel, presumably without further incident. 2. Road casualties halved at London's Bank Junction since traffic other than buses and bicycles banned
The number of people killed or injured in road traffic collisions at London’s Bank junction has fallen by more than half since it was closed to all traffic other than bicycles and buses for 12 hours a day on weekdays. A decision on whether to make the ban permanent will be made in the coming months.

Police in Woking, Surrey are giving ‘yellow cards’ to people who cycle through pedestrianised areas of the town centre in a move described as "utterly stupid," with the charity Cycling UK questioning the motives behind the initiative and calling for roads in the borough to be made safer for people on bikes.

4. Japanese schoolgirl aged 11 wins patent for ingenious bike parking system based on magnetic forces
A Japanese schoolgirl aged 11 has won a patent for a bicycle parking system which uses magnetic force to move the bikes either side of the one being parked or retrieved, thereby making the system easier and safer for people to use and preventing bikes from being damaged.

A cyclist who reportedly assaulted another cyclist on a Washington DC trail has been identified thanks to his Strava activity. Edward Shortnacy has been charged with malicious wounding for the incident, which took place on the Washington and Old Dominion (W&OD) Trail last month.
