Crowdfunding raises huge sum to bring cycling to elderly Scottish care home residents

Cycling Without Age aims to allow anyone feel the wind in their hair again

A cycling project that allows elderly people to get out on a bike is to expand following viral video footage of care home residents enjoying a spin.

The BBC featured a video online of the Falkirk-based Cycling Without Age chapter, which had around 26 million hits on Facebook.

There followed a crowdfunding campaign which raised over £43,000 to expand the programme across Scotland, which will be combined with EU funding through the Scottish government.

The group is now able to purchase additional Trishaw bikes which will bring this project to new care homes giving up to 800 more care home residents access to rides.

We recently reported how the Brighton Cycling Without Age chapter was also crowdfunding for a second Trishaw, and is well on the way, with £3,000 of donations.

Each bike costs around £6,000 and is ridden by volunteers.

The article fails to mention that the biggest Cycling Without Age project in the UK is in London, managed by Time & Talents in Rotherithe and facilitated by Cargobike Life

Fantastic, as a volunteer for Age UK I often chat to the oldies about their past and pretty much down to a man/woman they all rode bikes. Let's hope that the elf n safety nutters don't get a twitchy bum and stick their oars in!

A pal of mine has MS and we're trying to figure out a way of getting a few miles round the country lanes near his care home  (without having to splash loads of cash) hopefully with a few fast runs where conditions allow. As he's an ex-copper with the MET I might have to be a bit cautious as I don't want to get dobbed in for Wanton and 'spurious' driving/riding ...
