The Lazer Elle Women's Helmet is ideal for commuting and everyday riding, provided you don't have a lot of hair – I struggled to get it to work comfortably with my ponytail.

I've become accustomed to women's helmets having some form of 'ponytail port' or extra adjustment system to help them sit comfortably on the heads of those of us with long hair. Unfortunately, this is something that the Lazer Elle's innovative adjustment system is lacking.

Having very long, thick hair, I struggled to get the helmet to sit properly on my head unless I wore my hair in a very low ponytail at the base of my neck below the helmet. This is a style I find uncomfortable when riding, and prefer to have a higher ponytail or plaits, neither of which fit well under the helmet.

However, having tied my hair up below the helmet, it was then very easy to adjust and fit nicely to my head. The adjustment system is controlled by a knob on the top of the helmet, meaning that it didn't tangle in my hair as I twisted it – a great bonus, almost redeeming the lack of ponytail space!

Otherwise – and for those of you without a ponytail! – the helmet is relatively lightweight and compact for something of its price and didn't look especially bulky once on. It features plenty of ventilation (22 vents), which Lazer says are especially deep to keep you cool.

I certainly found it very comfortable to ride in, with the straps sitting neatly around my ears and with no chafing around the neck.

Lazer also offers an optional Aeroshell for £14.99, which can be bought to fit over the helmet. Despite looking and feeling rather flimsy, this Aero Shell slots securely into place on top of the helmet where it might well have an aerodynamic benefit – I don't have a wind tunnel to test that – but certainly offers extra warmth and protection from the rain in winter.

The helmet comes in three colour schemes – this wonderfully bright Blue Coral colour scheme was my favourite – and two sizes, small (52-56cm) and medium (55-59cm).

Comfortable, well ventilated and easy to adjust but doesn't sit well over a ponytail.

The size adjuster is in the top of the helmet as opposed to the rear, which prevents it tangling in long hair. Plus I love the bright colour.

Not very ponytail friendly.

It's light, comfortable to ride in, and the adjustment system is easy to use, so overall a good helmet and well worth 7. I struggled to fit it over my hair, so not as versatile in this respect as some.
