JLT-Condor's Ian Bibby starts 2017 with a win Down Under

Preston-born rider takes advantage of late crash to win opening race at Bay Crits in Geelong

Lancashire-born pro cyclist Ian Bibby has got 2017 – and his new career with JLT-Condor – off to a winning start after taking advantage of a crash on the last corner to win the opening race of the Bay Cycling Classic in Geelong, Australia.

Orica-Scott had managed the race throughout to set up Caleb Ewan for the sprint, but he and other riders aiming to contest the win were ruled out of contention as a result of the late crash.

Former NFTO rider Bibby, who had been leading out team mate Brenton Jones, profited from the confusion to make a burst for the line and take victory from Jesse Kerrison of IsoWhey Sports-SwissWellness.

The 30-year-old rider from Preston, quoted on the team's website, said afterwards: “We were working for Brenton to be honest. did a good turn for Brenton, we got him in a good position and I sat up and there was only six or seven left [in the final lap].

“And then they all went really hot into that corner and they all went down. I thought ‘best get my head down’. It was a bit of luck — it’s a shame they all crashed but I suppose that’s bike racing,” he added.
