At road.cc every product is thoroughly tested for as long as it takes to get a proper insight into how well it works. Our reviewers are experienced cyclists that we trust to be objective. While we strive to ensure that opinions expressed are backed up by facts, reviews are by their nature an informed opinion, not a definitive verdict. We don't intentionally try to break anything (except locks) but we do try to look for weak points in any design. The overall score is not just an average of the other scores: it reflects both a product's function and value – with value determined by how a product compares with items of similar spec, quality, and price.

Giro's long-fingered Hoxtons are comfortable multi-season merino and synthetic suede gloves. They are great for spring, autumn and unseasonably warm winter commuting, and are stylish enough to complement workwear for those who forswear Lycra on the ride into town.

The palms are made of synthetic suede, which is eminently soft, with no padding per se, but there are double thickness layers over parts of the hand that have the most contact with the bars.

The Hoxtons aren't waterproof, and aren't suitable for machine washing either. The fabric making up the top of the gloves is 9% merino wool, which allows for good thermoregulation. They kept off the chill and I didn't overheat in them, but the palms did get a little sweaty on occasion. I liked the neatness of the leather edging too (though it renders these gloves unsuitable for vegetarians).

Along the thumb is a microfibre surface for the inevitable brow-wiping. There's a good amount of towelling, covering the majority of the thumb.

The forefingers are responsive to touchscreens by dint of some very discreet metallic threading. I found it easy to use my iPhone while wearing them, which is a massive boon for map reading on the move.

The Hoxtons have what would be called a race fit on a jersey – slim and not overly roomy. They are a unisex design, though chaps may well need to size up for a comfortable fit.

There is a little pull tab on the inside of the wrist, which is reinforced to stand many wears, and a discreet Velcro closure with a soft suede backing completes the pared-down look. I would have liked the cuff to be a little longer, to help cover the gap between jersey and glove as they finished just on the wrist line.

Ok, thoughts on mine after 4/5 months use.

1. They may have a tiny, tiny bit of merino in (9%, really?) but it does nothing to regulate temperature as my merino based jerseys do (they are not particularly warm...coming from someone who runs hot btw) and they smell after a day's commute.

2. Had a hole in them from around the 2nd or 3rd month of use? That's wearing them once a week btw (they smell after one day's commute you see)

3. The cuff is not long enough - my bad, I sort of guessed that when I bought them...but they do look good!!

4. They do look good!

Wouldnt buy again unless I had a much bigger discount than I got with the ones I have (paid £23 I think)

personally I'd have given them 2 and a half stars.

Durability on mine is so-so. That touchscreen-enabling thread has been working it's way out of the fingers with minimal use.
