10 of the best cycling cafes, as voted for by you

Cycling, coffee and cake go really well together. So it’s no wonder the number of cyclist-friendly cafes and coffee shops has increased massively over the last few years. Cycling’s popularity has boomed since 2012 and cafe owners have been keen to offer cyclists a place to meet, socialise and refuel during a ride.

Everyone has their own favorite cafe, so we decided to conduct a little survey on Facebook this week to see which cafes you’re all frequenting. The list isn't rated in any order, we've simply plucked a few at random from the several hundred replies we had to the FB question.

David Sykes nominates Siempre on Dumbarton Road, Glasgow. It’s great for local food and good atmosphere, he says, adding it does “Cycling film nights, club meets and has a beer garden too.”

Cathy Milner recommends Prologue Performance Cycling Cafe in Harrogate. It is “Great for coffee, cakes and protein shakes,” she enthuses.

Wayne Jones goes to Cafe Velo in Llantwit Major, Vale of Glamorgan, Wales. It’s “run by a cyclist,” he says, and “Adjoins a great bike shop, with great coffee, cakes, very friendly atmosphere and a focus of many club runs,” he adds.

Fiona Makin’s favourite place to stop is Zarina's in Kettlewell, Yorkshire. “Not only does she make great food, we are always welcome, there is space for our bikes, a good stock of energy bars and your bidon's are filled for you, there is even a new covered area in the garden for us,” she shares. “It’s worth the cycle up Wharfedale any day of the week.”

Kerry Lufc Cracker’s tip is BroomWagon Vélo Café in Retford. It offers an “awesome menu, uber-friendly staff and a great collection of retro bikes.”

Jamie Spencer Smith shared this photo of Maison Du Velo in Reigate! “Great coffee; Great cakes: Great rides GREAT BIKES! The Thursday night thrash round the Surrey hills is my favourite night of the week,” he says.

L.j. Robinson reckons you should visit Pedalling Squares cafe in Gateshead. She says: “Bike shop attached and first-floor space for turbo sessions and bike related classes. The naughties (cakes etc) are to die for and the staff are really helpful. Loads of my friends and other mothers go there and they go for the atmosphere, as they don't cycle. The cafe also organises regular group cycle rides for all abilities. Amazing place - plus I nearly forgot, they have music and social nights too.”

Some people even relocate to be near their favourite cafe. Annabel Canaven favours Sandsfoot Cafe. She says: “there are super speedy people who go miles and miles and also people who just like a bimble along the Rodwell trail. All abilities welcome and children and dogs. The views are stunning overlooking Portland harbour and, of course, the castle in the backdrop. Plus the coffee is better than anywhere I have been before not to mention the amazing scones. The service is great and the owners always fun and friendly.”

Becky Brown tells us Café Ventoux on the Rutland Leicestershire border in the village of Tugby has to be the best cycle cafe ever. She says: “it only opened in July, but wow have they got it bang on, great coffee, great food, great staff and such a cool place, they even had an evening with Ned Boulting on Saturday night. I also understand they are holding sportives next summer. just the best that I've ever visited.”

Finally, Paul Joseph Corcoran recommends The Dalesman cafe, Gargrave. He doesn’t go into detail why it’s go good, but the photo he shares of the cafe certainly shows a very inviting sort of place.
