Witness appeal as cyclist killed in Leeds, motorist arrested

Fatal incident took place yesterday evening on A62 Gelderd Road

West Yorkshire Police have launched a witness appeal after a cyclist died following a road traffic incident  in Leeds yesterday evening.

The 41-year-old bike rider was involved in a collision with a Rover 45 car on the A62 close to the entrance of a waste management site on Gelderd Road at 6.40pm.

Police say that despite receiving emergency treatment from paramedics, he died at the scene.

Officers arrested a 29-year-old man on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and he is still in custody this morning.

Detective Sergeant Carole Greaves of the Major Collision Enquiry Team said: "This collision has occurred during the latter part of the rush hour, yet I am certain there will have been a number of people travelling along the A62 at the time who may hold vital information about the incident.

"I would urge anyone who saw the incident itself, or who saw either the vehicle or pedal cycle before the collision to come forward. Enquiries are ongoing."

Anyone who saw the incident is requested to contact PC James Harrison of West Yorkshire Police's Major Collision Enquiry Team via 101 quoting incident number 1156 of the 18/08.
