I don't think we can accuse pikeys of these crimes! Surely they would just weigh them in.
Pikey is short for turnpike, it's self an old term for gypseys who used the turnpikes.
Chav derives from the word Chavy, gypsy for boy.
That's why (although it might be common place in some parts like Kent). Both terms are racist.
Nope - Chav is nohing to do with pikies/gypsies. It is an an acronym for Council House And Violent.
I never knew that!
OK - can we settle on a non-racist pejorative term to use for the bottom feeding scum sucking gentlemen who decide there is nothing wrong in stealing someone else's belongings, putting so much effort into disguising them, and then selling them on.
To me, it really seems if they are going to that much time and effort then why can't they just get a real job???
Yes the term does indeed refer to the turnpikes which were better and faster routes for getting from place to place and for which a toll (charge) was levied.
So in the distant past the users of turnpikes included pedlars and a range of travellers who were not an underclass and who paid their way as they went about their business. Such is the development of language that the term is now derogatory and refers to a particular group of people.
Agreed totally that the term "chav" with it's similar background is also racist. Not aware of any conviction in the UK for the use of "chav" but there has been for the use of "pikey".
I still wonder why people feel unable to get their message across without using discriminatory (racist) language, or why people think it is acceptable.
As you say language develops, pikey has a clear meaning as does chav and neither is solely a racist term, derogatory, certainly, but not necessarily racist. They are about "Us" and "Them", people differentiate other people into groups, upper, middle, lower, A,B,C,D, E, nationality, religion, gender, orientation, scrounger, striver, etc etc etc
I'll change P***y to chavscum, is that ok?
Against every fibre of my being, straining to resist, I am with Simmo72 and at Shay...sorry.
I'm all for being nice and everything, but internet fora are just hilarious. And that's kind of the point.
Back to the story - excellent news that such things are being investigated and followed up.
I can't see a way of stopping this crime. there used to be a time when no low life scumbag shit for brains bike thief would even look at a road bike, they weren't cool. then bradley wiggins wins the tour and every pikey fcuktard is on the prowl. even your old heavy steel frame is not safe because some skinny jeaned bearded hipster wants to buy a nicked colnago so they can make it into a fixie with skinny bars.
I'm pro tear gas/razor wire alarms and sterilizing all prosecuted burgulars but its just not seeen as politically correct.
Neither is the discriminatory use of language, nor the hardly disguised swearing shown above.
Moderators could we do something about this, especially the racist element regarding the term "pikey"?
Scum, sub-human scum.
Explains how Ribble keep the prices down.
Will ring them tomorrow
