BMX star Liam Phillips wins inaugural Parkour Ride

Clean sweep of podium by BMX rders at multi-disciplinary event on Saturday

Liam Phillips, who helped devise the course of the inaugural Parkour Ride held in a multi-storey car park in London’s Docklands on Saturday evening, emerged as the winner on a night that combined music, food and beer with some thrilling bike racing.

Phillips, world BMX champion in 2013 and who last week became the first Briton to win the UCI BMX Supercross Series, prevailed in the final of the multi-disciplinary event against former national BMX champion and British number two, Ryan Stack. The podium was completed by a third BMX rider, Tre Whyte.

David Millar, who retired from racing following last week’s world championships, was at the venue, Tobacco Dock in Wapping, to lead road cycling’s challenge, but was knocked out ahead of the quarter final stage by mountain biker David Jackson – although he was wearing some natty reflective gear.

Two women competed in the event – all-rounder Anna Glowinski of MuleBar Girl-Sigma Sport, riding a mountain bike on the evening, and Manon Carpenter, MTB Downhill world champion.

Glowinski said on Facebook: “Absolutely went for it tonight at @parkour ride! Only two girls in the comp, me and Manon Rose Carpenter.

“Fair to say the girls did a pretty good job with some knock outs and awesome over taking! I am totally buzzing from this event and am just glad that I didn’t embarrass myself.

“No shame in the end getting knocked out by Sam Pilgrim and was blown away with the storming win by Liam Phillips!!”

Head to @ParkourRide on Twitter for more from Saturday evening - it certainly looks like the event went down a storm with competitors and spectators alike.

Parkour Ride turned out to be a brilliant idea, and as the first "proof of concept" the event in the Tobacco Docks had a real buzz

At Giant Docklands, we were proud to be involved giving free technical support to all the competitors, we also gave away lots of swag and a £1,000 shopping spree in our store.

Great work from the Face team running the event, all the riders who battled it out, the sponsors and spectators who braved the pouring rain to make it to the event.

Yep, I know Tre's dad was very pleased. Us BMXers work on acceleration and the tight turning capability of a BMX bike gives it a real advantage. CK Flash said he had a sore throat after DJing for the all event.
