Para-cycling worlds head to Mexico in 2014

April's championship in Aguascalientes will be only the fifth edition since inaugural event in 2007 ...

The city of Aguascalientes in Mexico will host the Para-cycling Track World Championships next April as the competition returns to the calendar following an absence in 2013.

The scheduling of a Para-cycling World Championships for 2014 was welcomed on Facebook with the words “at long last” by Irish rider Colin Lynch – who like Great Britain’s Jody Cundy has voiced concerns the lack of competitive opportunities for those with disabilities.

The last Para-cycling Track Worlds were held in Carson, California in February last year and were only the fourth such event since Bordeaux hosted the inaugural edition in 2007.

Beginning on 10 April and lasting four days, the 2014 event takes place at the same velodrome where world records tumbled earlier this month when it hosted a round of the UCI Track Cycling World Cup Classics, the speed of the track helped by its altitude of 1,887 metres.

UCI President Brian Cookson said: "With UCI Para-cycling Road World Championships already awarded to Greenville, I am delighted to say that we have now a full, robust and exciting calendar for Para-cycling in 2014.

"We had several organisers interested in hosting the 2014 Para-cycling Track World Championships and I would like to thank them all.

"Congratulations to Aguascalientes and Mexico which have already demonstrated their ability to host major international events."
