Our intrepid Leon’s position
Our intrepid Leon’s position doesn’t appear to have moved for some time. Whinlatter Pass, just before the Hope Memorial. What’s it like around there? Looking at the satellite view it looks kind of isolated.

+1 for Rival from me too. I
+1 for Rival from me too. I deliberated for ages between Ultegra and Rival (looked briefly at Force too, but Rival offered a lighter weight than Ultegra and better value than Force). I have the short-cage version of Rival, but if you climb you can opt for the long-cage and fit a wider cassette to make ascending easier.As roadracedave says though, they’re all good, but if you’re taking as much interest in the details as you obviously are, I’d say you’re past the Tiagra stage by now anyway.

Mini-bike. Folds down and fits in the boot. 8-speed, Teflon-coated chain, probably cost around 450 once it’s launched in August. Much nicer and well thought through. Particularly interesting when you consider the Mini is built by BMW.

Beetroot juice, I’ve read,
Beetroot juice, I’ve read, can increase stamina during sports activity. This is not yet proven without doubt, although my anecdotal evidence appears to support the claim. I’ve also read that it turns one’s pee pink – this I can categorically confirm :O

shuttie92 wrote:Go second handNot a bad idea. Particularly for a first bike. There’s nothing in the bike-world quite as seductive as a brand new bike, but so many fancy new bikes are bought with good intentions of future rides, and then sit unused for a variety of reasons. Often they can be picked up for a bargain. Unless what you’re buying is REALLY old and shows signs of having been badly cared for any repairs that might need to be made are unlikely to cost a significant amount. Bikes are simple, and repairs are relatively inexpensive – it’s when you start to upgrade that the bills rack-up! You’re also guaranteed to be able to ride before you buy.

@Jason Baron. I do understand
@Jason Baron. I do understand that, but perhaps you were just lucky. Since this is a first road bike I’m assuming the OP has no ‘numbers’ to work from, (are you going to tell him what to start measuring?) making sitting on one the most accurate way of assessing the fit. I really can’t see the sense in advocating a purchase of a thousand pound first bike without sitting on it first!

@Jason Baron. I think you’ve
@Jason Baron. I think you’ve just proved my point about the importance of getting the right fit. Your Look was badly suited to you by the sound of it, and it made every ride a misery. OP here is looking to spend ‘long saved cash’, and I feel it’s important that they sit on the model before they decide. I’ve never bought a hat without trying it for size, nor would I want to buy a bike blind. Also, buy a bike from your LBS and it COULD be the beginning of a valuable relationship.

They’re all great bikes, but
They’re all great bikes, but the best one for you is the one that fits you best. If you can’t sit on it first, best not to buy it.

But I must just add, there
But I must just add, there are many bikes around that remain cracking value for money. What else can you spend a few hundred pounds on a have so much fun with year after year?

I’m completely unqualified to
I’m completely unqualified to answer this, but that’s never stopped me before… so here goes. I guess there’s a bit of foreign exchange rate that comes into play here – prices are often set on a speculative ‘guess’ at forward rates, combined with an increase in UK V.A.T. Oh, and a bit of profiteering too I’m sure. Bikes are still selling well, and I guess most manufacturers have hungry shareholders towards whom their true allegiance lies. Why make x% on the sale of a bike when you can just as easily make x+1%? That’s a fact of the world we live in.What I really do object to through is the deliberate downgrading of components from one year to the next. Strikes me as being morally dishonest. An Allez with Tiagra is simply not the same as one with 2300. How many ‘new’ riders know enough to question the facts? If components so integral to the performance of the bike are changed (I’ve seen the same done with wheelsets) it’s simply no longer the same bike.

Well, what has become obvious to me is that I’m clearly not trying hard enough :”>

My Enigma Esprit titanium
My Enigma Esprit titanium frame was delivered ten days ago. Built up and several rides in now, and I have to say I feel it fairly hums at high speed. Beautiful ride, as smooth as silk. Most of all it looks like a classic, and if it looks right, then one knows that it MUST be right. And the weight is not too shabby at 7.2kg. So, I didn’t get the steel frame I set out to get, that’ll have to wait for another day, I think perhaps instead I got something even better. Two thumbs-up to Jim and Greg at Enigma.
