Don’t marry the profficient Claudia Schiffer without first getting to know the flair of Monica Bellucci. It’ll end in tears.

A lot of what we buy in

A lot of what we buy in cycling we buy for emotional rather than impassive reasons. Everyone has their reasons for paying over and above a product’s material worth. But, as long as you’ve worked it out and have come to terms with it, then it’s okay. For most of us cycling is an emotive passion, a dream, an escape.

For this reason I’d prefer to ride a Bianchi, and for me it’d be worth paying the extra – although I’d swap out the wheels for something better.

It’ll be super tough – but a lot depends on the humidity. What’s it like there? I used to ride in the Arabian Gulf – day time temperature of 50 degrees through July and August. We’d start a ride in the dark at 4.30 and finish around 8.30 – by which time it was knocking on the door of 40 degrees. VERY low humidity though – so we could breathe and just had to ensure we drank all the time. At the occasional times of high humidity it was just miserable – but not impossible. Anyway, you can’t go to Mallorca and not ride a bit!

Ummm, forgot to mention I’d prefer somewhere it didn’t piss down most of the time.

After the first four days you’d never even notice the rain. Sun in October will involve a bit of flying time I guess. Great plan to mark your 40th in this way. Have fun!

    Ireland! Cycle / train to

Ireland! Cycle / train to Holyhead; fast ferry across; then Dublin – Wicklow Mountains – aim for the Ring of Kerry (Molls Gap in photo). A lot of riding, a lot of beauty, a lot of craic. Airbnb-it! Damn. I wish I was going!

Those cycling/walking into work are usually far more alert/ready for work than those choosing to drive in.

My thoughts of commuting by bike are frustrated by the fact that I usually work at home. However, to mitigate this, three times a week I go for a circular 35km ride, get home, shower, dress, sit at my desk and am certainly more ready for work than if I simply drift downstairs in my pyjamas and switch on the laptop!

If I’m out for a solo ride, I’m out for a solo ride and that’s that. I’ll let anyone sit on my wheel for a bit – but after that I’ll drop back, have a genuinely friendly chat, and then let them know I’m on my way again. Easy.

Tubular only makes sense for best bikes, best rides. The ride is plush, but you weigh this against the risk of inconvenience if you get a flat. I can’t understand why anyone would go to the expense of fitting tubular wheels and tyres, and then fill it with sealant. If you’re that concerned about getting a puncture, stick with clinchers (regular or tubeless) and carry a spare tube in case of emergencies. Save the tubs for the weekend.
