The shop should still be able
The shop should still be able to fit you to it. There is a school of thought that the ‘sportive’ geometry bikes are un-necessary, and that the answer is simply to use things like headset spacers to make a ‘standard’ geometry frame fit the rider. That’s pretty much how mine is currently set up. Not saying it’s any better, just that it shouldn’t, IMHO, put you off.April 16, 2012 at 11:34 am in reply to: Newbie road cyclist getting his summer gear. @boardmanrider – I’d find it
@boardmanrider – I’d find it less surprising if cycling was a cheap sport in the first place, but given the expense of the sport in general, it’s bordering on the comicly ironic.FWIW, I’ve got a Rapha (etape commemorative) jersey, that cost me the same as the fancy carbon bottlecage that’s on the front page right now. I thought that was great value.

Planet X will do you a carbon
Planet X will do you a carbon bike with SRAM Red for that price.Felt or Focus would also provide good bang for your buck.

I know what others are
I know what others are saying, but Rapha kit is really nice, and if you can afford to treat yourself, why not? Kupepe might like designer clothing in general, are you all going to tell him to shop at George@asda instead?Anyway, I have a refer-a-friend thingy, which gives us both 10% off and free postage, but it needs to be your first order, and you need to spend £100+. PM me if you’re interested (or if anyone else is).

With this thread in mind, I kept score while I was out on Thursday. Only 2 other riders didn’t wave/nod, and one of them insisting tailing me for th next 5-10 miles, alternating between drafting off me and yo-yo-ing off my wheel then catching up again. I do hope he found it tough!notfastenough

Well one of the advantages of shopping online or via a product catalogue is often a price discount, but for a few quid extra you can buy from a local bike shop and reap the benefit of bags of experience to help you choose. If you aren’t even worried about that then definitely look up your local retailers. I was hovering around Specialized’s offerings until I found a good shop who could genuinely work out what I needed, and ended up with something else.Although, I am curious; surely the other party’s insurance will only cover replacement to an equivalent value of the damage or something – otherwise people in your position would simply find the baddest team issue speed machine for £10k?!

Sorry, but the idea of getting savaged by the pet dog for trying to put him in this is too funny… :)) I’ve got a wallace & gromit-style mental image.notfastenough

Why?He will have focused the majority of his objectives around the early season, in particular the classics. He won’t be like this in July.

didn’t think of
😕 didn’t think of that.Boardmans are fairly well-regarded, but then this very site gave the Carrera a good review. I suspect you would be happy riding either.
If you plan to upgrade the wheels, maybe go for the Carrera, if not, go for the Boardman.
Alternatively, pick the one that you like the look of – if you think it looks fast, you will be fast.

Interesting thread – I’ve got much the same question, with the added ‘advantage’ that my current wheelset (including tyres/tubes) is actually just over 3kg(!) according to the kitchen scales (shh don’t tell the missus I did that…) so I reckon anything around the 1.6kg mark is going to feel rather different!notfastenough

I was finishing a Sunday morning ride and overtook a lad in club kit on his own. He followed my wheel, and after a bit we got chatting. I joined the same club.

@IOM Paddy – don’t mean Rapha
@IOM Paddy – don’t mean Rapha gear do you? 🙂 kinda know what you mean, although while out in a Rapha top on Thursday i was overtaken by a fast lad in full Rapha racing kit on a black Condor – we both said hello. I’m inclined to think he was a pro or at least supported by RCS in some way. -
