The convertible gabba is £165 plus quidco cash back, so still pretty good.

Anyway, reason for the post was to help others save money if they are the market for a Gabba and not one upmanship on I’ve got a bigger discount than you ;)

😀 Ha, no not at all, just wanted to chime in that there are some genuinely good deals out there at the moment.

I’ve just paid 150 for the convertible version (zip-off long sleeves) from bikeinn.com – I think it was nearly £50 more at probikekit. Also paid £54 for Free Aero Race bib-shorts from castellicafe.

Speedplay are excellent. Some users report them to be high-maintenance (you’re supposed to inject grease every 2000 miles but I forget to do it) but I don’t find them a problem. The cleats are expensive (I pay about £35.99 for a pair), but they are about to start lasting longer as Speedplay are apparently releasing a couple of new versions early in 2015; an aero-bottomed cleat and a tread-bottomed cleat, both of which will use a rubber sole to prevent the wear and tear of cleat on tarmac when walking.

    Cleats help massively. If you
Cleats help massively. If you drive your feet forwards from the 10 o’clock to 2 o’clock position, pull them back (think of scraping dog muck off your shoe) from the 4 o’clock to 7 o’clock position, then just ‘unweight’ the pedal on the upstroke*, you will naturally apply pressure on the downstroke anyway. All combined together, this produces a much more fluid pedalling style, smoother riding and higher speed.

Quite frankly, I’d steer clear of anywhere that suggested they just kept your feet in position. Given your location, you could do a lot worse than paying a visit to the specialized concept store. They’ll position the cleats for you as well, which is a skill in itself.

*I believe the latest thinking is that actually pulling up on the upstroke carries a risk of knee issues.

    Wattbikes can be hired or
Wattbikes can be hired or bought in instalments for about the same price as a gym membership, so I suppose it depends on whether you plan to keep the gym.

The keiser M3 is good, the resistance varies wildly in the gym because people just let them slam back down after moving them, knocking the resistance magnet out of calibration. But if it’s yours, you could do a quick adjustment before you use it to ensure a reasonably consistent power curve. Power, HR, cadence etc all present.

Good idea for a thread! I like the idea of a new windproof/water resistant jacket. So far, Vulpine have mailed me to say their softshell jacket is £99 in the sale and the soft-shell gilet is £65. I’m also interested in a Castelli Gabba, though don’t know how much I might find one for. I’m unsure on sizing too – everyone says go up a size, but the sizing guides I can find still suggest Medium as per usual (5″11″, 70kg, 37″ chest). Decisions decisions.

Well the climb I mentioned is a common one for me, and I know that when I’m fitter, under 5 minutes is doable. On Sunday it took me 6:14.

Having said that, I suppose you have all got a point re the other factors. The thing is, if someone else had posted this, I would have been among the first to say the same thing!

As it happens, I had the bike stripped and serviced (you try doing it yourself when you have 1-year-old twins!) and the mechanic must have removed the Garmin mount when cleaning everything, as it’s now 90 degrees out, so I can’t really use the Garmin anyway. Maybe he knew the secret truth and this was his samurai way of making me ride through winter without numbers…!

Anyway, I’ll crack on and try to stay motivated. Maybe I’ll dangle the carrot of a treat when my time on that climb goes back under 5 minutes.

    Thanks all.

@shakebeforeusing – thanks, I’m upgrading from Bontrager race wheels to Franc, so hopefully I’ll see a similar improvement.

Might I also hazard a guess that you’re single? Or at least, not yet in such a long term relationship that your/your partners money has morphed into ‘our money’? I reckon most on here earn a decent salary – I’m freelance and do quite well thanks – but with a house/wife/kids/cars/christmas etc, it’s not just a case of throwing money at my toys whenever I want.

In response to the OP, I’m hoping for a few cash donations in cards, as I wouldn’t trust anyone else to get the right chainset! “Great thanks Mum, can you make sure it’s a 6800 series 50/34 172.5mm in grey?!”

I have asked for some Chase marmalade vodka though – it’s awesome!

+1 for the service…I bought mine through Ebay (from the Swiss Side folks), got them for €350 all in – so equates to roughly the same discounted price and came with same extras in the box as Notfastenough, so was delighted on opening the ‘prezzie’ when the box arrived. Colour scheme goes with the bike well…but will be a bit of a ‘mare to keep clean – being white. i’d certainly look at their Hadron range if I was in the market for some carbon wheels in the future…

Thanks for your detailed post, I guess that’s about what I expected in terms of performance. Re goodies, I bet it’s not just me who’s eyeing up the matching jersey and swissside bottle cages/QR skewers is it?!

I am dreading the cleaning though – thinking that maybe some snowfoam that car geeks use might come in handy. That and *careful* use of a jetwasher. My Trek Madone 4.5 is black/white with a hint of red/blue – it’s the old team colours, and should look ace with the Francs. I have ranted on here in the past about everything being a variation of black/white/red, but screw it, I got good deals on both the bike and wheels.
