    What if the OP wasn’t
What if the OP wasn’t competitive? He could be fit and fast but if not into racing, wouldn’t be interested in his FTP. Does that mean he shouldn’t buy nice wheels? We’ve all smiled at the guy with top-end gear who makes too little effort, but that’s not what this is about. Should we all be forced to ride cheap bikes until we ‘earn’ the right to better ones?!

    Oh. Sorry.

Anyway, how long do you have to hold it for, for it to be your FTP? 30 secs? 5 mins? 30 mins?

OP. Go buy your wheels. Ride your bike. Have fun.

So, who do you think wins? It appears to be a 2-horse race between valleys cyclist and angelfishsolo… 😀

I think the OP should have to
I think the OP should have to sticker-print his FTP (re-sampled monthly, obviously!) on the deep-section rims he buys. Oh, and the shop should demand to see his shaved legs before allowing him to buy them.

    What a load of nonsense.

If you fancy dropping some cash on nice wheels, then drop some cash on nice wheels.

Wheelsmith reckon that their handbuilts are superior to anything available commercially. That’s a fairly bold claim, and basically rests on the idea that the pro’s use Dura-Ace or Zipps or whatever because the large rim area is just too ripe for advertising space. For those of us without obligations to sponsors, go for the handbuilts.

As for Mavics, I’ve only got Kysrium Equipes, but they are outperformed by the stock Bontrager Race wheels on my Trek. I don’t think I’d go for Mavics again.

I do still massively regret not buying the project one frame I saw in a January sale last year. “Leadout grey with pink accent” I think it was.

    How much was the saving?

It was a 6.9 SSL frameset, using 700 series OCLV. Price including stem etc, for £1249, which was half the RRP, and the colour scheme was nicely unique. At the time I was wrestling with bike-fit issues and didn’t know whether the 56cm H2 was right for me. Turns out it is right for me, and I could have taken the gamble and built up a phenomenal bike, but hey, hindsight is 20/20. There was also a black one with blue flames for £50 more, so when reading this I have to smile, as at the time the flames look was a bit too flashy.

That looks like a great option.

I was out on my nice bike today because my winter bike is in the shop for some work.

That said, I did hear about a bloke riding round on zipp 404s in January.

Well the real question (that I didn’t ask) was:
How do fit the missus, twin babies, a twin buggy and assorted paraphernalia in the car, and how do I take them, luggage and bike away for a week? I don’t like tailgate carriers and I don’t like 4x4s, so the answer appears to be:

Buy an estate, a Thule Outride 561, a narrow roof box and some of those quiet aero roof bars.

I would of course just stick the bike in the boot if on my own.

    Thanks!

Well you can get chest mounts
Well you can get chest mounts I think, but I figure these are more for the go-pro kind of shape – the contour is too long and thin for wearing on the chest. If you managed to somehow rig it up on your shoulder, you wouldn’t be able to ‘look’ at vehicles as they overtake. You would, however, look like the Predator.

“That’s just it. It ain’t no man. We’re all gonna die.”

I fancied a 675 but the integrated stem is quite low – the stack height is unsufficient for me. I compared the geometry charts and concluded that it would do my back in, so I went elsewhere. Lovely bike though, good luck with it!

Contour Roam 2, £115 on Amazon, £15 for the helmet mount, £20 for a decent size mem card. Set to HD. Red light on the side means a few drivers have clocked it when alongside me. Great footage. It even came with a really sturdy diving case for when I go underwater on holiday.

Bar mount means no useful footage when someone is playing silly buggers while driving alongside you.

I reckon that will be awesome. Pro-team colours on bikes is fine – it’s not like wearing team kit because it’s just a colour scheme usually. I’ve got a Trek 4.5, but it doesn’t have radioshack or anything on it, just a couple of red/blue flashes. Enjoy it!
