I’d vote for Continental GP5000TL in 28mm. Got them front and rear and haven’t noticed any issues with grip, punctures etc.

Double check that the thru-axle is properly tightened etc. and then go for re-aligning the caliper. It’s easy to do, but can be fiddly to get the caliper just right if it moves when tightening the bolts. Probably a ten minute job.

For colder rides, I go for a long sleeve merino base layer under a jersey and maybe a jacket on top too if it’s really cold. I’ve never used a gilet as like Ktache, I don’t like getting cold arms. I don’t really understand gilets as my body generates loads of heat when pedalling hard, but my arms aren’t really doing much work and have greater surface area so they can get cold quickly.

I’d go for a good cycling rain proof jacket first.

Ages ago, I tried a Respro “pollution” mask, but it was too hot and uncomfortable for use whilst cycling.

I’m doubtful that face masks are much good in stopping viruses as people do tend to touch and fiddle with face masks (as Ktache said). There’s also the problem of removing and putting them on – people are unlikely to remember that the outside of the mask could be contaminated, so every time you touch it you should go and wash your hands again.

That said, I might get around to making one from an old T-shirt just for going to the shops etc – especially if they become recommended.

Surely a heart attack or stroke would always result in a trip to A&E in an ambulance? There’s such a thing as silent strokes which if they don’t damage anything critical won’t be noticed without an MRI scan or similar. Surprisingly, almost half of people who have had a heart attack didn’t realise it at the time – the symptoms can be almost identical to a bit of indigestion.

A story that’s starting to gain a little traction is the huge drop in the number of heart attacks and strokes since the lockdown began. At the moment it’s unclear if people are simply not going to hospital with their symptoms or if there has genuinely been a decrease. Given that there was a study published last year showing a temporal relationship between high pollution and rates of heart attacks and stroke I think there’s a good chance it will be down to the pollution.

I hope that it is a real drop and not just due to people not using medical services.

There seems to be a link with Covid-19 disease and damage to both lungs and heart, so the reduction in pollution could have a significant effect in reducing the severity. Let’s hope that people remember this and don’t just go back to forming huge queues of slow moving traffic.

Edit: Found the study that indicates heart damage: https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jamacardiology/fullarticle/2763846

I’m hoping for a big shift in public opinion now that people can see how much nicer, quieter and safer it is without so many motors on the roads.

The air is cleaner, clearer and now even the sun has come back out (though that might be a seasonal difference).

If you’re going to get all relativistic, then you’d have more mass at the top of a hill (due to potential energy) than the bottom. However, you may have less weight as the hill-top will probably have slightly lower gravity.

The President in particular is very much a figurehead — he wields no real power whatsoever. He is apparently chosen by the government, but the qualities he is required to display are not those of leadership but those of finely judged outrage. For this reason the President is always a controversial choice, always an infuriating but fascinating character. His job is not to wield power but to draw attention away from it. On those criteria Zaphod Beeblebrox is one of the most successful Presidents the Galaxy has ever had — he has already spent two of his ten presidential years in prison for fraud.

Was that one of those slot-head pins? When I got one of those seized, I took it to a bike shop and they used a dremel to cut a new head into the pin and then remove it.

When you get it out, replace it with a hex-head pin instead – they’re much better.
