The ANT+ speed, cadence and combined speed/cadence profiles are well specified standards and should be supported by your Bryton and most sensors you’re likely to meet, e.g. Garmin, Bryton, Bontrager.
FWIW I currently run a Bryton 35 with a bontrager combined speed/cadence sensor and it works absolutely fine.

Given the Irish ancestry and that Seán is the equivalent (cognate) of John in English (and often pronounced very similarly) I’m surprised they’re not both called Seán.

Don’t have the link to hand but it’s on their website under the SL-6800 product menu. I could of course have completely misunderstood what you meant 🙂

Miles253 wrote:Time are great pedals, a bit less ice skating than speedplay I’ve heard. Does that depend on how you set them up?IME they are less ice skating than Speedplay, as there is the (slight) resistance on the footplate, but although the Speedplays felt a bit odd at first I really don’t notice it now. I’m using the Zeros, so you can wind in (limit) the float on either foot, adjust it on either or both of the inside or outside rotations, or even lock them out completely (hence the name). TBH i’m not conscious of any twist at all during normal riding, perhaps my pedalling and/or ankle has adapted – I do do it deliberately sometimes to shake out my legs a bit but that’s about it.
I did really like the Times – started with iClic2 Racers and went onto Xpresso 4 when I trashed the Racers. The only thing is that they didn’t hang particularly well, the Xpresso basically not at all which made them a little less easy to clip into (well for me anyway) – but the Xpresso had a noticeably better foot plate with loads of support. I’d personally recommend them over the SPD-SLs i’ve tried, never tried Looks or the top-notch Shimano ones so can’t comment.
(edit) Meant to say – the thing with the Speedplays that I really like is that you don’t really deliberately clip in like a lot of other pedals i’ve used, you just sort of stomp down on them and the pedal slides into the cleat and aligns itself. The KeepOnKovers (very useful) add the ease of doing that.

madindehead wrote:Cool thanks.I am thinking I am going to change my pedals, as I don’t like the way the R540 pedals are. I find it quite hard to find the area to clip into, because of the lack of any rise at the front of the pedal.
Can anyone recommend any specific pedals?
You might want to have a look at Speedplays. I loved my Times for the ease of clipping in over SPD-SLs (and their float) but after a sort of forced move to Speedplay, prefer them over both. Double sided, easy to clip in (especially with KeepOnKovers) and brilliant float – might not be your cup of tea but could be worth a try.

700c wrote:I read the article which explains why 25’a can only be a good thing. Maybe 25’s are marginally better in certain circumstances, and certainly if you fine 23’s uncomfortable then definitely a wider tyre is usefulIn defence if the 23mm tyre, however:-
we’re talking marginal gains aren’t we? So you have to factor in the negative aerodynamic effect of having a tyre bulge over the rim.
Or the financial burden of upgrading your rims to a new, wider one which will accommodate a 25mm without the bulging effect.
And the weight penalty of the wider rim + wider tyre..
I think the real gain is not out-right speed, but rather that you can get a noticeable improvement in comfort and grip from something that is no slower (and may be quicker).
As for the rims, you don’t need to change them – although wider is definitely nicer – a 23mm will bulge on ‘normal’ 19-21mm rims anyway, and you still get much of the benefit from the 25s. The weight ‘penalty’ is marginal for the tyres (same model), non-existent for the tubes and more effected by the make of wheel than rim type, e.g. my 23mm Bontrager Race TLRs are lighter than my skinny Aksiums.
In short, if you’re not on really smooth tarmac all the time, I personally think it’s hard to see the argument for23mm (or less) tyres on a road bike.

People go on about power transfer etc, but cyclocross races involve loads of accelerations out of corners and SPDs work fine. The prompt for moving to road cleats (from SPDs) on my road bike was hot-spots. Subsequently, I moved to Speedplays due to the free-float (knee and leg injury.. and a spacer issue due to my old cleats, not normal that one though). I love them now for a lot of reasons, and find the clipping in and out better that stuff i’ve used before (SPD-SL/SPD/Time) especially with the Keep On Kovers.
Of course tottering around on them does make me feel like an extra from Priscilla, Queen of the Desert sometimes but hey – I don’t tend not to go walk-about in them so that’s not much of an issue. For mixed surface use, especially if you think you might get off the bike etc, i’d go for SPDs or flats. For pure road work, i’d take the Speedplays any day. YMMV.

daddyELVIS wrote:However, please do check exactly what DB said when justifying the hiring of Leinders – any ounce of respect I might have had for him was lost right there!I have been doing just that. Sounds like naivety and a lack of planning to me (oh the irony). By Skys own admission, the previous decision to hire British, non-cycling doctors would have left them ill-prepared, if continued, if someone on their medical staff went away – as happened when their soigneur died suddenly. They went with someone (part of 4 part-time positions as I understand it) with previous experience, in particular with riders in adverse and extreme conditions.
Sky also began to realise that you can’t always get what you dream of… (Brailsford 2011)
“We’ve got to admit now there is a difference between having a dream, an aspirational goal, and specific targets. So what we need to do with individuals is to allow them to work towards specific targets – so it is something they can control.
“If I could wind the clock back we would have a much more humble arrival into professional road cycling. There was a real element of hype and I’ll hold my hand up and admit I got caught up in that. We would tone that down if we could start all over again.”
That’s fairly open to me. When things started crawling out of the woodwork, they spoke with Leinders and investigated, BR had this to say at the time (road.cc)
“I categorically, 100 per cent say that there’s no risk of anything untoward happening in this team since he [Leinders] has been with us,” insisted Brailsford, quoted on Telegraph.co.uk.
“I’ve seen nothing and neither have the full-time medics. I’d put my life on it,” he continued, adding: “”He’s done nothing wrong here, but we have a reputational risk.
“This is not about doping. We’re pushing the guys to their limits, so we need to look after them. It’s about genuine medical practice,” he maintained.
Brailsford went on: “We have had discussions with him and once we’ve established the facts, we will take the appropriate action.”
They investigated, and terminated his contract. Afterwards Brailsford said of the matter
“The whole thing is my responsibility,” said Brailsford. “I will take that squarely on the chin. It’s something I regret, it’s a mistake.”
“I should not have done it. I made an error of judgment.”
None of that comes across as a straw-man. Stupid ? Yes. Predictable ? Probably. Evil, plotting, scheming, cheats ? Probably not. People trying very hard to win whilst doing making things marginally better in cycling ? I’d say so, but many wouldn’t. It’s also incredibly difficult to prove you’re not doing something, especially in a competitive sport. Up to you – I like to think i’m open minded on this either way and I think where I have an issue with some, such as yourself, is that you’ve got yourself in a position where you can’t reasonably change your mind no matter what happens. I really hope i’m actually wrong on that.

daddyELVIS wrote:Here’s a simple example of Sky BS – you might call it a ‘straw man’ – but to me it’s quite clear:Person DB said: they would only hire British docs from outside of pro road cycling to avoid links to doping.
Person DB then hires a foreign doc who was previously employed by a cycling team with a doping problem. If you want a ‘straw man’ check out Person DB’s justification for hiring dodgy foreign doc!
I don’t make this Bullsh!t up you know – Person DB is an expert at it!
Brailsford said, when setting up Sky that Sky needed two additional doctors and, at that time, he wanted them to be British doctors without links to cycling to try and ensure no linkage to cyclings doping scandals. What he didn’t say is “i’ll never hire doctors from inside cycling”. So you have created a slightly different version of his stance, used that as a foundation of their behaviour, countered it by their hiring of Leinders (that was at best and ‘interesting’ PR move by them, agreed) and thus conclude they’re full of BS. Unreasonable precise ?
