Scrufftie, sent you a long and rambling email!Daveyraveygravey
Not so sure of the benefits
Not so sure of the benefits in upgrading myself. Either a frame or wheels – what are you thinking of spending? I know you don’t want to hear this but why not wait a couple of years work on your fitness in the meantime and see what money you have available then?Daveyraveygravey
Hard to tell from what you’ve
Hard to tell from what you’ve said. I rode 2.5 hrs this morning then had a bacon sarnie and did another 2 hours; we’re all different. For me, I get a pick up just by stopping around the 2, 2.5 hrs mark, even without eating. Are you just riding too hard and/or too long?
I believe your body can only process something like 60 cals an hour so no point pigging out. What do you drink on a ride? I got through two bottles on my ride today, one of water one of SIS diluted stuff, I find sipping constantly really helps me, a little and often.Daveyraveygravey
Done a lot of cycling in
Done a lot of cycling in Abruzzo but mainly on quieter country roads. Generally Italian drivers are better than in the UK with cyclists, more likely to give you space and overtake when it is safe. You will still get the odd feckwit who will not see you or pass too close though so still be as aware as you would be here.
There are more groups out cycling where we are in Italy but it might be because it is either along the coast or heading inland 35k to the mountain. “Salve” is a common greeting with other cyclists.Daveyraveygravey
Some of what you say is
Some of what you say is valid, but I have to disagree on some points.“Worst of all seems to be the growing number of people that get into daily slanging matches with car and bus drivers.
I’ve even seen and been on the recieveing end of arguments with fellow cyclists. Where’s the solidarity brothers and sisters?. How many people have to die before you are going to understand the simple rule: Biggest Wins!
Dont fight cars you are going to lose. Surely deference is the key for all us road users to get along.”NO! Biggest does not win, and you shouldn’t have to bow down and grovel along just because another road user is in a vehicle. I don’t “fight cars” but if any fecker thinks that they can drive badly around me, I will point out what they are doing wrong. Loudly and with a lot of arm waving. I used to swear and call them effing c’s, but have calmed that down a bit. A lot of cyclists think it is useless, but if it makes one driver take a bit of care then it is worth it. I have seen it work; when a car does a close pass and I call them out, usually the next two or three cars cross over the white line and pass properly, and I acknowledge them.
“It never used to be this way. Will it ever revert or has the lid to Pandora’s box fallen off its hinges?”
Er, no again. I have ridden for 35 years, and there have always been careless or aggressive drivers who don’t think cyclists should be on the road and think it is ok to drive badly around them.
“Someone said to me recently “Cycling is the new Golf”. The shock has worn off but the pain hasn’t gone away.”
Yeah, I don’t like that one either, golf has never appealed to me.

Some chainsets can be a problem – I want a 52/36 on my next bike and some on the shortlist only have a compact. Evans were telling me on certain Fuji Transonic models you have to get an adapter as well as the new chainrings and that could be another 150 quid on top. Other shops are more helpful though.Daveyraveygravey

andyp wrote:remember, kids – there’s no such thing as ‘spinning out’. It’s just shorthand for ‘I don’t know how to pedal quickly’……or shorthand for “I’d prefer not to be spinning at 120+ rpm”… Can you talk us through how to pedal quickly?
My current bike is a 9 speed 53/39 with a 12/27 on the back. I am looking at an 11 speed mid compact with 11/28 which I think will give me a more useable range. There may be bigger gaps at some point in the cassette but I can live with it. My son’s Allez has a compact and when I ride that I find it doesn’t take much of a downhill for my old man legs to be flying round.

Was just about to chip in
Was just about to chip in with my thoughts on Rose and Giant Propel (demoing a Propel on Saturday!) but seems pointless now! I had a little spin on an Aithein recently, and it was lovely but didn’t feel or look a huge amount different to my current ally bike. That’s why the Propel really appeals to me, I think it is one of the best looking sub £2k bikes out there.Daveyraveygravey
Caught my eye too although I
Caught my eye too although I would prefer 105 and a lower price, which I can’t see as a choice in the UK. You can spec 25mm tyres which may alleviate the harshness as would changing bars and or stem.Daveyraveygravey
Buy the one that gives you
Buy the one that gives you the biggest buzz, the one that makes you set the alarm on a Sunday at 6am to go out for a ride, the one that would make you look out the window at the gale and/or drizzle and go out anyway… Fit and vfm are important too!Daveyraveygravey
At the show on Thursday
At the show on Thursday evening the Canyon guy told me they weren’t doing test rides this year – was disappointed but doubt you can tell much about a bike on that kind of ride. Think I read somewhere the Endurace isn’t hugely different to the Ultimate in geometry terms; certainly not as different as other manufacturers make them.Daveyraveygravey
Got the chainset now,
Got the chainset now, struggling to get the BB though. The part number is FC4-MIB593. Can anyone tell what the correct BB is, or where I can find out?February 17, 2015 at 7:26 pm in reply to: Budget wheelset – Fulcrum R7, Mavic Aksium, Shimano RS31, Campagnolo Khamsin G3. Which ones? #832487Daveyraveygravey
Had Khamsins on my road bike
Had Khamsins on my road bike for 2 years and 10k+ miles. No problems to report although the bike is having a service next week which may flag up something. Still dead straight.Daveyraveygravey

ianrobo wrote:why bother with a gym, use the money to pay for a turbo trainer
Well, the cast comes off in three weeks. If I get a turbo trainer it will probably not get used again once the cast is off, and I have to try and set it up one handed. However, if I enjoy the gym I might carry it on, and the rest of my body might get more out of it. Plus my garage is a manky leaky place I don’t really want to spend any time in!Daveyraveygravey
Used a recumbent at the gym
Used a recumbent at the gym last week for 30 mins, got the worst pain in my glutes I have ever had and had to stop. Used a more upright one this week and it was loads better.
Still rather be out on the roads in the cold. grime and drizzle… 🙁 -
