Kask has unveiled the Utopia which it claims to be the “fastest ever road helmet”, developed with Team Sky and ridden for the first time in the Santos Tour Down Under.

Kask says that it tested 10 of the best road aero helmets on the market in the wind tunnel (it doesn’t list those helmets) and created a 3D scan for a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation. The helmets were tested at various speeds and yaw angles to reflect different conditions.

Kask says that the Utopia resulted in a saving of up to 6 watts when riding at 50km/h (31mph) compared to the best competitor helmet – you wouldn’t expect any brand to publish data where its products didn’t come out on top, would you?

Utopia uses 5mm-thick padding made from a material called Resistex which is said to be fast wicking and quick drying. The yarn uses a continuous filament of conductive material based on active carbon. It is said to help regulate heat as well as being bacteriostatic and antistatic.

The Utopia has a claimed weight of 235g (size medium), which is light for an aero helmet.

The Utopia will be available later in the year although no price has yet been released.
