The Garmin Edge 810 cost from £320 when it was first released in 2013, but Aldi will be selling the GPS computer for just £179.99 this Thursday, during its latest Specialbuys discount day.
As with most Aldi Specialbuys, it’s usually a good idea to get along early to avoid disappointment. You can pre-order one online with dispatch on 29th September. Check it out here.
When road.cc reviewed the Edge 810, we found it to do “enough to justify its place at the very top of the bike GPS pile if you want a navigation-enabled, fully waterproof, mapping GPS computer that you can stick on your bars.”

The 810 has been recently replaced by the completely revamped Edge 820, with introduces loads of new features as well as providing a lighter and more compact design. You can read our review of it here.

I hear that for longer rides
I hear that for longer rides of 10-12+ hours, depending on the ambient temp, and what is used in terms of functions, backlight and display options, one may need to consider a back-up USB battery pack/ hub dynamo power options. If ANT+ is not required, a 2xAA Garmin Etrex can last over 24hrs displaying map & track constantly, and with spare batteries a simple option, especially if one forgets to set off without a full charge.

These are chinese copies of more reputable brands at half or less of their price. They have to achieve the savings from many areas, besides the usual marketing, branding, overheads, etc.

On a side not I got the leg warmers from Aldi yesterday. Pretty nice cut with some forming for the knees, used them this morning and were plenty warm enough.
I wish they’d sort their sizing out though. Last time I bought a top I had to get a small (i’m thin, 5’11). Bought a base layer in a small and it was, well, too small. I thought I’d take a chance with the pro bib tights and whilst they look to be well made, sadly unless your legs are probably 32 or less I’d say forget about them. Mine were half-mast and I’m about a 33 leg. They all seem to be the same leg length regardless of waist. All the merino stuff had gone in my local.

They’re identical in appearance, and chain retailers aren’t interested in counterfeit products. There may be differences in spec to the official Moon product, but they’re not going to explode. This is UK retail which comes with a megaton of consequences for selling dangerous products (unlike fake Chinese products on eBay).

I got a pair last year from Aldi (when they were Dexshell branded in the sock but not the packaging) and whilst they don’t look as good as my Sealskinz (“Sea Eagle”, argyle) they perform almost as well (and plenty good enough for the cold/wet/slushy winter commutes), and the looks don’t matter when you’re also wearing bib tights and overshoes.
Just added another pair to my winter cycling kit drawer.
By the way, the ankle length waterproof socks also look to be rebranded DexShell, but you would be playing a pretty poor ‘sock game’ if you went for those

Bought a pair of merino socks
Bought a pair of merino socks & a £6.99 base layer. I always buy one size bigger in cycling clothes but even the xl base layer only just fits. I know they’re meant to be snug but no way is it 45-47″ & 42-44″ fit me in normal clothing.
On the subject of the chip-on
On the subject of the chip-on-board lights – picked up a front one yesterday in my local shop. Got it home, turned it on… and it exploded.

Actually it might as well have exploded. I swear I’ve still got dots on my eyes this morning. Full power is insanely bright. The only disappointment is that the mounting strap isn’t long enough to go around the headtube on my bike as I hoped it might be. Going to have to bodge something.

That’s almost certainly the case and Aldi/Moon haven’t given me a cease and desist yet. The beauty of course is that you can get several bespoke Moon mounts to stick them on helmets etc and guarantee they’ll work. Longevity? No idea. But given you can buy almost 4 of each for the same price as Evans Moon original………….
