The BBB BioWetLube Chain Lubricant is an all-weather lube with heaps of environmentally friendly credentials. It’s pleasingly light as far as wet lubes go, but this does mean it isn’t as durable as some of its main competitors.

BBB’s latest line of Bio cleaning and maintenance products continues with its BioWetLube Chain Lubricant. The lube itself is odourless and dark blue in colour, and comes in a 100ml bottle with a needle-tip applicator, which works very well and distributes the lube evenly with plenty of control.
All of BBB’s newer cleaning and lube products have strong environmental credentials, which really adds to their appeal – especially as a lot of the competition’s products contain some quite nasty chemicals I feel uncomfortable using. The BioWetLube is listed as being made of ‘100% plant-based ingredients’ and is supposedly ‘100% biodegradable within 28 days’. Kudos to BBB – this is a nice touch and, while a lot of brands make similar claims, it’s great to see BBB prioritising this across its whole range.
I applied the lube to a completely clean chain, which I’d cleaned using BBB’s Biodrivetrain degreaser. I let this seep into the chain links, after which I wiped off any excess. The blue colour does take a little shine off of the chain, and after only a little riding it started to look quite dirty. The testing period coincided with warm and dry conditions, but there were several wet days, so although I didn’t get a chance to test the lubricant in the harsher depths of a British winter, it still had to face some pretty wet conditions.
This is lighter than I’d expect for a wet lube. It’s pretty thin and, after wiping off the excess lube, I was a bit apprehensive that there wouldn’t be very much left on the chain at all. But things ran smoothly and without any squeaks, and it didn’t pick up as much grime as I’d expect from a wet lube.
However, this did come at a cost: its wet-weather performance. My first wet ride came a few days after I first applied the lube, so I put another light coating on the night before my ride ready in preparation for the morning’s damp roads.
After about 100km of riding on these roads, with a couple of showers thrown in for good measure, I started to hear noises coming from the drivetrain. I stopped to inspect it, and the chain looked and felt pretty dry. Given how light the lube is, and how easy it was to clean, I can’t say I was surprised – but I would have hoped to see a little bit more durability from a lube marketed for ‘all weather conditions’, which I take to include wet days.
The lube was easy to clean, especially with BBB’s own drivetrain cleaner, and didn’t leave much residue. It needed a bit more maintenance than the wax-based Squirt lube I usually use, but for an oil lubricant I was pleasantly surprised.
Value
Like most products in the BBB range, the pricing is reasonable, with the 100ml bottle costing £9.99 – the same as the likes of Juice Lubes Viking Juice, Trutension’s Bananaslip Wet Lube, and the Motorex wet lube.
One of BBB’s main competitors when it comes to lubes and drivetrain cleaning products is probably Muc-Off, and its Wet Weather Lube is two quid dearer. Having used the Muc-Off lube, I’d say that it’s more durable, a lot more oily but not quite as pleasant as the BBB lube to use.
Marginally cheaper options include Fenwicks Wet Lube, Peaty’s Linklube Wet Weather Lube and Green Oil’s wet lube option , but there’s very little in it price-wise.
Conclusion
Overall, I liked using BBB’s BioWetLube Chain Lubricant and found it relatively clean-running – and I also appreciate its green credentials. However, if you want a solid winter companion for riding in genuinely wet conditions, I’d suggest there are more durable options out there.

Verdict
Reasonable all-conditions option at a fair price – but I’m not convinced it’s an all-weather lube

Although the lube is light, easy to apply and clean, and reasonable value – I’m not sure its performance makes it a genuine all-weather lube.
