Muc-Off Dark Energy Chain Wax is the first wax-based chain lubricant from the company in many years, as it has long championed oil-based lubes. Billed as “the invisible force,” it keeps the drivetrain clean but underperforms when exposed to even small amounts of water.

Muc-Off says Dark Energy has been in development for four years, with ambitious claims around maximising efficiency and durability and reducing drivetrain wear.

The lubricant is PTFE- and PFAS-free and is manufactured from a blend of waxes that includes a biodegradable, plant-derived ingredient. Muc-Off says this formulation creates a durable dry film for consistently high performance and suggests it is suitable for both dry and damp conditions.

Performance

The application was straightforward. The bright white colour, combined with the bottle design and consistency, makes it one of the easiest and most consistent drip waxes to apply. Muc-Off suggests leaving it for at least 12hrs, and leaving it overnight is the simplest. For some riders, getting into the habit of re-lubing after a ride, rather than just before heading out for a ride is a vital step to get used to.

As with all wax-based chain lubricants, thorough chain preparation is essential. All factory grease and any previous oil-based lubricant must be removed to ensure proper adhesion. Muc-Off recommends applying a drop per chain link, repeating it twice, and leaving it to cure for those 12hrs so the lubricant forms a film on the chain. Once dry, the lubricant is barely visible, which is where the “invisible force” claim originates.

Throughout testing, I used Dark Energy on a fully stripped and degreased chain that had been cleaned in an ultrasonic cleaner to remove all contaminants. I tested it both as a standalone drip wax and as a top-up lubricant on an immersion-waxed chain using Molten Speed Wax once the original wax coating had worn away.

Dark Energy proved clean in use, although not quite as clean as Optimise Graphene, which is still the cleanest I have used. There is still minimal dirt and old wax buildup sticking to the chain during both on- and off-road riding.

My testing did not support the claim that Dark Energy is suitable for both dry and damp conditions. Even limited water exposure, such as splashes from puddles, stripped the wax from the chain surprisingly quickly.

On several rides, the chain became noisy and appeared to be largely free of lubricant in under 50km. In completely dry conditions, longevity improved, but it was still not exceptional. The chain started to become noisy after just over 100km, which equated to approximately 4.5 hours of riding, and was stripped clean in less than 150km.

This is on a par with some other wax-based chain lubricants, and especially the cheaper options such as Squirt, Smoove and the basic Optimize Chain Wax.

Dark Energy was developed through Muc-Off’s in-house testing, including fixed-tension dynamometer testing and slack-chain contamination testing, which the company says provides a better understanding of real-world performance.

The lubricant has also been independently tested by Bike Engineering using a controlled protocol that has been applied across a range of drip wax products. In those results, Dark Energy recorded the best efficiency in a full-tension dynamometer test and finished second to Smoove in the slack-chain configuration. Within the test protocols, there is no mention of weather conditions, or potential water, which is the main area where I found Muc-Off Dark Energy a letdown versus alternatives.

Value

Available in two sizes, a 50ml bottle for £15 and a 120ml bottle for £23, Dark Energy is priced close to its main competitors, but the recommended amount per application increases running costs.

Muc-Off recommends two drops per link, compared with a single drop per link for Silca Super Secret, meaning a bottle is likely to be used more quickly. Silca Super Secret costs £16 for a 60ml bottle and £25 for a 120ml bottle, while a larger 240ml bottle is available for £45.

Squirt, one of the most popular and more affordable wax-based options, costs £14.99 for a 120ml bottle.

CeramicSpeed UFO All Conditions is priced at £21.99 for a 100ml bottle and, in my experience, delivers similarly below average performance when conditions become damp.

Dark Energy is considerably cheaper than Muc-Off’s previous flagship lubricant, Ludicrous AF, an oil-based formula that costs £40 for a 50ml bottle. Ludicrous AF lasts a long time in perfectly clean environments, such as indoor riding, but attracts dirt when used outside, which is likely to accelerate chain wear over longer periods.

Overall

Despite the bold marketing claims, my experience with Muc-Off Dark Energy was underwhelming. Its performance in the presence of even small amounts of water is poor, which limits its usefulness in typical UK riding conditions.

In completely dry weather, performance is reasonable, with durability and levels of cleanliness that match some similar brands. However, once puddles, damp roads or light rain enter the equation, it struggles to match the performance and longevity of other wax-based chain lubricants currently available at a similar price point.

Muc-Off has finally created a drip wax option, and it is a decent first version. But despite the claims, it is not durable enough for typical British weather riding, and the price is identical to more established and well-regarded alternatives, despite requiring more per application.
