Near Miss of the Day 228: Yet another driver cuts in front of a cyclist on a roundabout

Our regular feature of near misses from around the country

Today’s video in our Near Miss of the Day series is similar to a number we have seen recently, reflecting a worrying trend – a motorist entering a roundabout while a cyclist is negotiating it.

We’ve said this before, but it’s impossible to tell in these circumstances whether it’s down to the driver not seeing the cyclist, because they are looking out specifically for motor vehicles, or whether it’s because they misjudge the rider’s speed and think they can nip in front. Clearly, neither is good and both break the law.

This one happened on Wednesday to road.cc reader Steven, who told us: “It all seems so common these days, some drivers just don't care.”

> Near Miss of the Day turns 100 - Why do we do the feature and what have we learnt from it?

Over the years road.cc has reported on literally hundreds of close passes and near misses involving badly driven vehicles from every corner of the country – so many, in fact, that we’ve decided to turn the phenomenon into a regular feature on the site. One day hopefully we will run out of close passes and near misses to report on, but until that happy day arrives, Near Miss of the Day will keep rolling on.

If you’ve caught on camera a close encounter of the uncomfortable kind with another road user that you’d like to share with the wider cycling community please send it to us at info [at] road.cc or send us a message via the road.cc Facebook page.

If the video is on YouTube, please send us a link, if not we can add any footage you supply to our YouTube channel as an unlisted video (so it won't show up on searches).

Please also let us know whether you contacted the police and if so what their reaction was, as well as the reaction of the vehicle operator if it was a bus, lorry or van with company markings etc.

> What to do if you capture a near miss or close pass (or worse) on camera while cycling

Simon joined road.cc as news editor in 2009 and is now the site’s community editor, acting as a link between the team producing the content and our readers. A law and languages graduate, published translator and former retail analyst, he has reported on issues as diverse as cycling-related court cases, anti-doping investigations, the latest developments in the bike industry and the sport’s biggest races. Now back in London full-time after 15 years living in Oxford and Cambridge, he loves cycling along the Thames but misses having his former riding buddy, Elodie the miniature schnauzer, in the basket in front of him.

I’ve got so used to preparing for drivers to pull out in front of me on roundabouts during my commute if I ever drive through the same roundabouts I find myself doing it in the car( covering the brake and adjusting my road position.) I think quite a number of drivers just don’t give a fuck. After one driver pulled on in front of me and we collided( I managed to pull parallel to him as we came together) he stated that “ I should have seen that he was coming on to the roundabout and avoided him”  I was quite rude to him, happily my steel rat trap pedal had left a nasty gouge in his door so we left it at that.

As the article implies, this scenario is so common it's hardly worth commenting on; except next time the cyclist could be dead.  I wonder why the government aren't addressing the issue?

google something like "roundabouts injuries" and will find plenty of research that shows that roundabouts reduce injury and death .....lower speeds and better angles than cross road style / traffic light intersections ....but this only applies to people in vehicles ... cyclists and ped's are fair game and just don't count.  (full stop)

Well, last time I checked, roundabouts were the most dangerous road junctions for everyone, but especially cyclists.
