He launched his first cycling website – the Cycling Plus Forum at the turn of the century. In 2006 he left C+ to head up the launch team for Bike Radar which he edited until 2008, when he co-launched the multi-award winning road.cc – finally handing on the reins in 2021 to Jack Sexty. His favourite ride is his ‘commute’ – which he does most days inc weekends and he’s been cycle-commuting since 1994. His favourite bikes are titanium and have disc brakes, though he’d like to own a carbon bike one day.

@Cycloid You're giving them too much credit. It's a classic case of they decided to resurface the road, and they realised they can avoid all that annoying time and effort spent doing their jobs if they just instruct the contractor to reinstate the road layout exactly as it was. Changing the road layout requires going through the steps you outline. Not changing it doesn't.

@hmsgenoa Not least because 15D nylon is basically tissue paper, so unless you're using a serious groundsheet underneath or camp exclusively on pristinely mowed, well-cared for lawns you're going to need to replace this tent every time you use it. I understand the desire for 'ultralight' but having encountered one of these big Agnes tents in a shop, I would never use one in anger, they seem way too fragile. I'll keep my Snugpak Ionosphere which cost £100 and has survived a lot of rocks/twigs/being shoved into bike bags with all sorts and is still fully functional 5 years later.

Yes, and this is one of the questions in the annual Active Travel England self-assessment that councils have to fill in - whether they take the opportunity of resurfacing to improve cycle facilities. My council (North Yorkshire) fills in the form to say it does, but when I asked, it was unable to provide a single example of having done so.

The depth of incompetence in B&H is incomprehensible. This must have gone through several iterations of planning and approval. Something Like ... Requirement for a cycle lane on this road - Discussed and approved by Council. Road engineer creates design plan - Approved. Funding - Approved Operatives turn up to implement - Jobsworths don't query Inspector signs off job - Approved as per plan
