Business Secretary Vince Cable scored no PR points yesterday when his chauffeur parked on one of the Barclay’s Cycle Superhighway routes.
The Evening Standard published a photo of the ministerial car parked on a double yellow line outside South Bank University.
Cyclist Charlie Holland said to the paper, “I trust his driver will be disciplined.”
The article prompts the usual flurry of pro- and anti-cyclist commentary, with the pick of the bunch being Brightonian Ian Dickson’s ill-informed remark, “If cyclists paid any sort of contribution to the upkeep of our streets, I’d be more kindly disposed to them. As it is, it costs me over £200 for the privilege of driving on our streets while trying to avoid lunatics on two wheels who go anywhere they feel like, irrespective of the Highway Code or, indeed, any criteria of sensible behaviour. They are a total menace.”

Perhaps he got it confused
Perhaps he got it confused with the other pilot Superhighway, the one from Barking to Tower Gateway, and assumed that since it runs along Cable Street he had an exemption from laws applying to everyone else? 😉

I went to pick up my motorbike from the garage at Colliers Wood where I’d had some work done and was intrigued to note how many cars there were parked on that cycle superhighway as I drove home. The buses seemed to weave in and out of the blue area with little or no regard for cyclists and I spotted one guy on a fold-up bike taking to the pavement so as to make any progress. If I was using a bicycle to commute by that route the blue painted strip would effectively be useless. Luckily my cycle commute takes me across a park and via a few roads with low traffic volumes.
